Rogers Explorer 8600HD STB

My sister in Cambridge Ontario just got her first HD TV and Rogers HD STB (non-PVR). The guy that hooked things up said he had never seen that box before. She tells me it says "Explorer 8600HD" on the front of the box. Over the phone, I walked her through trying to record a show and it's not a PVR. I'm wondering if Rogers is reworking the old 8642 (Nextbox 2) PVRs into HD non-PVR STBs.

Has anyone else heard of this?

Myself through rogers.. have NEVER seen an 8600.

I just looked it up.. and Cisco does make an 8600HD.. which IS a PVR.. but it has a card slot in it... like used in the US markets for CABLECARD.
It DOES look like the 8642 series though.

It might be that for whatever reason that it IS on the network.. it just doesn't have the right provisioning, etc on it.. that it just DEFAULTS to being a normal box.
I know they do that with some of the OLDER boxes.. some have HDMI, etc out.. could do HD.. but only have an SD box profile for them.

Rogers 9865, LG 47LV5400 LED TV, Onkyo HT-R690.

My SA8300HD also has a card slot, but it's not used.

That slot on the 8300 was meant for smart cards, not cable cards. At one time keys used to be loaded on smart cards. It was mainly used for satellite services; cable boxes never used them.
