Guys - I'm curious if you he latest success swapping drives was with 8642 with SARA or Next box firmware. I haven't been able the get a drive recognized running next box that I'm almost st positive works with the old SARA firmware.

Replaced 160 MB with WD Red 1 TB Drive

Two weeks ago, Rogers did a patch on my 8642. Next morning the error code Er:54 showed up and it constantly counted down in a loop. Sometimes it would lock-up and I would do a hard boot. After multiple reboots and no luck, I called Rogers support. They logged the call and over the course of two weeks, I called back multiple times, "they were still working on it." By the middle of the 2nd week I had decided I would replace the original 160 MB drive with a Western Digital WD10EFRX, 1 TB drive. Got the drive this afternoon, installed it, new OS was downloaded from the head-end. The 8642 was up within 30 mins.. I've scheduled multiple programs and will see how it performs. I've used this same drive as an external drive to expand the 8642 beyond the 160 MB internal drive. The WD10EFRX runs quiet, no problems so far.

Hey guys,

Wante to replace the drive in a 8642HD firmware version 5.1.1.105. Wanting to use the 1TB WD RED. Any experience with this? Did not want to buy the drive if it does not work.

Thankx

^ try reading the post just before yours.

I used the 1TB WD RED and it worked but I found that after a while the drive started chattering constantly like it was defragging all the time. So I switched back to the stock 500GB WD GREEN and it has more spindle whine but no chattering.

Just installed 1TB Black WD1003FZE. no formatting, just used as oem plug n play. Wish I knew if the 2TB drive was compatible. MY
current rogers box is 8642 out of warranty purchased at least almost 6-8 years ago(first gen), non nextbox upgraded to netbox guide. Firmware 5.1.1.105 - march or May, my pic of TV cut out. Original HD was WD1600AAJS -160gb wd blue.

Install was fine but... OMG make sure u plug your cable line back into the in, not the out. 2hrs of waiting on the h countdown, yep plugged cable into out not the in, haha. Drive noise about the same slight hum 24/7, solved by putting rubber pads on box feet. guide access quicker same with all pvr fuctions or Just replace your remote batteries if guide is slow, as i did no bench mark there, sorry. diagnostics show 931gb space available. It worked 89 bucks for 800gb up grade.

WD1003FZE or WD10EFRX on NB2 8642pvr

Hello All,

I've been reading the posts prior and it seems that the Western Digital RED WD10EFRX and or the WD1003FZE BLACK are the way to go for the Rogers 8642 PVR. I also noticed that some people used SSD although silent - a very pricey option and I doubt it provides any performance gains.

I have two 8642 PVR's one 500gb, and the other is a 320gb. I have a few questions;

1. Of the black and red models, how's it working out for those who used them? Any regrets, are they better than stock WD drives?
2. I am on version 6.0.0.0132
3. If you put the original drive in an enclosure, and use it as a second drive will the drive be formatted by the 8642 or retain its data?

I have a 9865 and plan on replacing the two current 8642's with two of those, since its a better box. So besides increasing storage, I would like to hopefully create additional incentive for resale value of the 8642s. I haven't had any issues with my 8642's *besides whole home surge* i have them on small UPS units, just sometimes slow IPG response.

Any input, greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would like to try putting my Red 1TB back in now that the box has updated software. It was nice and quiet at first with the previous software but after some use started chattering constantly so I went back to the Green 500GB.

The RED drives are on sale at canada computers $78, the black drives are a little over $105. I'd be very interested in your findings - did you try googling your issue? Maybe it can be solved with a jumper switch setting?

Maybe bigger hard drives can be used and scene by new OS.

Cheers

I finally install a WD black 1tb drive, it had the advance format and I didn't do anything but put the drive in. As noted in a previous post the box is the latest firmware 6.0.0.0132 - upgraded the box with the 320gb drive. There were no issues or errors. If anyone wants a more detailed post on this I can do it, the next box to upgrade is my 500gb unit.

Also to note, the TORX tamper proof screws on my one unit so far seemed to have three different sizes and the green tape was secure but thats not too important as I own the boxes - chances are the drives will naturally fail and both boxes are out of warranty by now. I bought the drive from Canada Computers and took the extended warranty which is direct replacement not repair and is good for three years.

PVR recording/playback issues

I own a Cisco Explorer 8642 box for Rogers cable, which came originally with a Western Digital Caviar Blue 160 GB SATA hard drive. The recording has not worked recently and the PVR has been a glorified cable channel selector to my dvd recorder. When I playback a recording, it is pixelized, jittery and unwatchable and the audio is garbled as well. I found a new WD Caviar Blue 500 GB (maybe one of the last ones in the city), formatted the drive using my Mac (fat32) then opened my box up and swapped in the larger hard disk and rebooted. Once it detected the new drive it took a while but I was back in business. Trouble is the problem with the pixelized and jittery recording was not solved by just replacing the drive. Could this be a motherboard or controller issue with the 8642? I would love to get my PVR recording properly again.

Have you checked your signal strength? Sometimes recordings require more signal than simply tuning:

Of course it could be another issue - loose connection inside the STB, etc.
