My 9242 just upgraded from V182 to V183! Can't find any changes yet though. Perhaps they've addressed the EHD issues?

EHD Full Bug - how to fix?

I have just archived a show on my 500gb Lacie drive and it was showing that I only had 2 hours left. Now I can not access my drive any more. Apparently this is the EHD Drive Full Bug. Can anyone direct me to instructions to remove a show or two using Ubuntu Live CD.

Thanks Doug:confused:

Here's a tip for those trying to delete or transfer files using the Ubuntu Live CD and the other instructions pointed to by this thread. You can execute this command : "sudo bash" (without the quotes) at a command prompt and this will open up a command prompt that has full root privileges so you won't have to mess with permissions. They will be preserved.

I plugged my old and new EHDs to my PC and using the Ubuntu Live CD, I was able to use just plain copy commands (like cp -r ) to copy the numbered directories that contain the files for each show, from one drive to another. I just copied them over and they showed up fine on the other drive after I plugged back into the 9242. Note the second drive was preformatted by the 9242. I did not need to mess with file permissions.

Hi all,

I have a case with an older 160 GB disk in it. It worked fine for over a month, switching the unit on only when I wanted to archive something or view something.

Now I can't archive anything else. The transfer starts but I get a USB error a while into the transfer and the disk then appears to be empty. I reconnect it and everything is still there, and I can still view archived material without errors.

The disk looks fine under Linux and e2fsck reports no disk corruption.

Any ideas?

Sorry, no clue. I assume you can play from the EHD, view contents and transfer files back to the receiver?

Or is it totally dead to the 9242? Does it reboot the 9242 when you try to access it?

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the behaviour of the various receiver/firmware/EHD combinations, and just about everything else that Bell does with these boxes too.

When I plug it in, it is detected and I can do the usual things, even watch archived stuff.

If I initiate a new archive, it works for a while and then quits with "An error has occurred with the attached USB device" (and words to that effect. Then selecting the EHD shows it to be empty, until I disconnect it and reconnect it. And so on.

9242 USB Disconnect Driving Me Crazy

9242 connected to a 1tb Lacie Drive

Back in October I bought the lacie drive and connected it to my pvr. At the time V182 was live and I was getting disconnect problems. V183 came out at the end of October and my problem went away. At the end of December the problem has come back and I get a USB Disconnect anywhere between 3 minutes and 45 minutes consistently. I no longer can restore my archive shows.

I only have 30 hours of HD currently on the drive. What am I doing wrong? Has it got worse for everybody else? Is it worth ranting at Bell or is this really a problem for everyone? Please help.

If my 1tb drive was not going to work, I would expect it would not have functioned perfectly for 6 weeks before getting the USB Disconnect problem on the 9242.

An interesting turn of events Bell has no solution at their call centre but when I disconnect the satellite signal the drive responds fine. I can archive, restore and playback with no issues. I reconnect and the problem comes back.

Am I really the only one having this problem still and my sat is a dud or is nobody out there using enough external hard drives yet to find out there are bigger issues?

Disturbed...

I can only imaging that after uploading these pictures the amount of SD & HD recording time available has dropped below the "empty" drives capacity of 30 HD or 200 SD.?

If that is the case I think you have found the limit for pictures.

John81, if the internal drive is like the external USB drives, it is formatted into three partitions. I would speculate that the photos are stored in a separate partition and you filled that partition up while the video recording partition is still empty.

If you connect an external USB drive you might be able store additional photos (I have not tried this).

couple of questions

I'm slightly confused about the 3 strike you're out rule for the EHD. Does it only apply if you're moving your EHD to different receivers or the same applies if you're unplugging more than 3 times from the same receiver?

Also, I got a Seagate 1tb Free Agent drive (silver colour) for my EHD. Has anyone used this type of EHD? If yes, any problems?

And lastly, I understand that the 9242 has two USB ports. Can I use the port on the back to connect my EHD and archive or does it have to be the front USB port?

My Seagate Free Agent EHD finally arrived and I've started archiving some content. So far so good I think.

Playback wise, it seems okay I think. I haven't tried watching a whole content from the EHD, but I played around a bit with Casino Royale I transferred (fast forwarded, playback) and it seems like I'm watching from the 9242's hard drive.

My problem is I'm not sure if this an EHD or a 9242 software issue, but when I tried to archive ~15 hours of HD content to the EHD, the transfer kinda stopped midway. Basically, early on in the transfer, I could view live TV and go back to see the progress by pressing the PVR button on the remote and selecting the External Hard Drive folder. When doing this, a progress bar and remaining time would appear. But after some time (maybe about 2 hours into the transfer), I tried to see the progress and there was no green progress bar showing nor a remaining time estimate. I stopped the transfer and some contents were transferred and others were not. It seems like I have to do batches of 4 hour contents to avoid this from happening. Anyone have this sort of problem?

Even though the progress bar stops showing, the transfer does continue. I have reported this problem to Bell and they are aware of it. I speak from experience with 2 9242's that exhibited the exact same problem. I don't know if this is still the case (obviously it is) because I no longer go back and forth to check on the progress. I suppose this going back to check stems from a distrust of computer systems that screw up frequently if/when the status bar stops responding.

I have also found that you can turn the 9242 Off (no lights on front panel on) and the file transfer will continue without interruption. This is now my preferred method of moving "stuff" back and forth.

Does your drive have an activity LED? I wonder if the transfer was still going, and it was just the progress bar that was stuck? I transferred about 10 hours of HD one time, over night. It took a long time and I wondered at the time if I should have done it in smaller batches, but it did finish.
