Just curious what is the maximum HD capacity that the present firmware allows. Presently I'm using two 500Gs seagates in JBOD mode in a NexStar MX which works just fine. Now Seagate has come out with 1.5Gs HDs will the present firmware support 3 TB capacity? If the capacity is unlimited, one might consider the Drobo which supports up to 16TBs on 4 drives, cool eh?
Has anyone who had a full external hard drive been able to access their recordings yet? I have a full HD here and haven't been able to get mine to work yet (it still forces a hard reboot everytime) and hate the thoughts of having to format it all.
I haven't tried it, and I don't think I will either, I'll just simply leave my EHD on and trust that it won't break down. Would be nice to turn the thing off when I'm not using it.
The three strikes and you are out is still in place with V183. I just checked.
Obviously this is very unfair to those who have been through the trouble of multiple receiver changes like me, and lost all their recordings.
It was easy for Bell to reset the counters with V183. Why I wasn't expecting it...
The EHD can only be used on 3 BEV receivers. Those who have had to return receivers for malfunction issues burn up one of the three receivers. Sucks if you want to take your hard drive and play it on others receivers.
I believe this is purposeful to limit copyright issues but I am unsure.
My EHD which was filled and had the resets-receiver-on-access issue still happened with 183. I hooked the EHD up to my PC and wiped it, then let the 9242 reformat it for use.
I archived a show to the EHD as a test. Worked OK.
I tried to watch the show directly from the EHD - wouldn't work - too much stuttering.
I then tried to restore the show from the EHD, and it consistently gives an error 855 "error copying from the USB device".
So, although 183 has solved my restarting issues, and the EHD is able to sleep and wake OK as it is accessed, it's still not working with my Maxtor 300GB in a Vantec Nexstar enclosure.
If I was really a masochist I would buy a Lacie drive and try it, but I think the problem with viewing shows directly from the EHD has more to do with encryption overhead than USB bandwitdth limitations.
This thread seems to still be having some confusing messages
My experience with V183 has been a big win. I bought the Lacie 1TB drive from Future Shop, with V182 I was getting disconnects after seconds using the EHD.
Now its at least delivering what Bell has promised... All HD I have archived over the last 2 weeks is playable on the drive... no freezing or hesitations..
The only thing I really wish it did was do the operations faster. To archive 1 Hour of HD take about 15 o 20 minutes... it will do it in the background... it would just be nice f it could do it faster.
The great news is i can record 1000 hours of standard or 130 hours of HD to the drive. BTW the new Lacie 1TB drive (single hard drive) compliments my Home Theatre it has a fantastic looking black housing and is far superior over any other drive I have seen.
Is there something I am missing? The ext. hdd (lacie 750gb) still disconnects when trying to watch an archived movie with v183 firmware. i don't see too many new posts. Is it working for most people?
Anybody out there still getting the ext. hdd disconnect when trying to watch a movie from it?
does the the ext. hdd have to remain on at all times even when turning the receiver off at night? Do I have to reformat the ext. hdd with the recevier because of the new firmware or is this inconsequential?
Anyone tried it with an Archos machine and the new version?
Okay, now that they have "fixed" the EHD issue, we are looking at purchasing an Archos Personal Media Player so that we can take our recorded programs with us on holidays.
Anyone have any feedback ??? If you have an Archos, does it work with the 9242, and do you have any problems?
One other thing that appears to be fixed with this new version, I have noticed that my receiver no longer goes into standby mode every night.
Glad they also fixed that; a bit of a pain as sometimes I wouldn't have a receiver remote handy. Also I set TVs on auto timers when I'm on vacation; partly for security but also to keep pets company. It will be nice to not have to set auto timers all the time when I'm gone.
Crashed when I tried to do a check switch (it had to cancel a recording in progress to do the check switch, then it pulled a Bill Gates and just hanged). Then after re-booting and running the check switch and downloading the guide, only two days of EPG was there. It crashed again when I tried to scroll forward by 24 hours (using the skip forward 30 seconds button while in EPG). I'm hoping this is just my individual 9242, as it is being replaced already, but this can't all be just a big coincidence.
The drive that I am using that works is the 1TB LaCie Hard Disk by Neil Poulton... product code 301304U.. not sure why you would be still having disconnect issues with the 750 GB.. Also replaced the short cable it came with and added a Geek Squad gold plated high speed USB cable in its place. Lots of problems with V182... no issues with V183 with my EHD... watched 4 hours of HD continuous tonight.
Rebooted at least twice this morning while in standby. When I tried to watch live tv, the pic and audio came up, but I couldn't pull up the guide, change channel, check show info, etc. Receiver then locked up and rebooted again. No external drive attached. Hoping Purolator shows up today with a replacement that works.
I recorded the Papa Roach concert last night on HD Net. Had 1 audio dropout for about 4 seconds during the one song I really wanted. Other than that seemed good.
new to the forum, just bought a Lacie 1Tb EHD archived 2 1hour shows on it. I'm having the exact same problem as Swiftpremium, try to play a program it would disconnect after a few minutes, tried to restore program to the 9242 and it would disconnect after 10-15 min. Tried rebooting the pvr by holding the power button for 10 seconds did not solve the problem, call bell for assistance and the tech told me to unplug the pvr from the outlet as if that would make a difference, he promised it would work, waste of time same result. Are there more people out there who are still having problems w/ disconnect issues even w/ the v183 firmware?
Sorry to hear ur having the same problem zenkeri. At least I know i am not the only one. I was able to watch 2 hours of a movie without disconnect, the movie was 3hrs and it was late so i could not see it to the end.
Today however I transferred chris rock "kill the messenger" just for another test as it is only 1 hr and something. YEP disconnected after 30 min
what could the problem be. do i have to reformat the lacie again because the receiver has a new firmware. Zenkeri it seems u reformated the lacie with the v183 firmware already there on your first use of it?
Anybody out there that can add some input? I was able to watch 2hrs with no problem but then today only 30min and then bye bye
Had numerous crashes last night trying to set up a vupass 'new' event timer for Two and a half men. I would set up the timer, hit create timer, and it would display the 'searching for events' window. Live program would continue to play in the background window, then video and audio would stop, and the machine reboot. Then when it came back up, the scheduled events info was unavailable for a few minutes. Then when I could finally view that info, the timers had been created as desired. Cancelling the same timer resulted in the exact same sequence of events, and did actually remove the timer properly in the end.
All these problems seem to have started a few days before the v183 rollout, but I did note that when I called the CSR originally he asked if I had 182 or 183. I think there may have been a beta rollout of 183, then an attempt to roll it back, then a full rollout of 183 to everyone. Not sure how this would work, or if it can/did actually happen, but whatever they did they put a serious SNAFU in the works of my machine.
Check switch crashed it. Download guide crashed it. Timer setup crashed it. Timer deletion crashed it. And it seems to be rebooting at random times throughout the day.
I've just spoke w/ 2 bell csr one of which is in the higher technical department, his only suggestion was to offer to send me a replacement 9242 so I'll see if that will work, as I did not want to loose my programs stored in my pvr I will archive all of it onto the ehd, he assured me that I will be able to access them when I get the new pvr, but for some reason I don't feel that reassured. One point of interest when I was on the "system info three" page the fifth line down says last connected 15-09-08 which is well before the new firmware update, don't know what it means but I would think they would have connected to my pvr if a firmware was updated? ps. the first rep. tried to sell me more programming. They can't even get what I'm paying for to work.

Dialing out is only for PPV and "inventory" purposes and occurs every couple of months. Firmware updates come down the satellite feed and are not related to the phone line.
Just got of the phone with bell and they said that they are aware some receivers still have problems and some don't. Of course they said they're working on it and I will need to wait for "a few days". however no time frame was given.
The rep said they will modify the existing firmware v183. So it seems there are different batches of receivers out there. Of course I could not get a good one. Yes they tried to sell me programming as well but i agree first make sure the equipment works properly.
How can i spend more money when the money i already spent i havent enjoyed the full use of the $600 machine? They should offer some sort of gift such as ppv credit for all this inconvenience.
One other change I've notice with V183. My WD 1TB drive goes into sleep mode when it's idle. There used to be a noticeable delay when I pressed the PVR button for the first time. Now it goes directly to the PVR menu, and I only see the delay when I actually access the EHD.
