Thumbs up Despicable Me

Now THIS is a 3D animated movie! Unlike Toy Story 3, whose only complaint I had was that it might as well have been 2D and saved the audience (and themselves) a couple of bucks.

Despicable Me is about Dr. Gru - an aspiring super villain. One of his diabolical plans involves using three orphaned girls as a decoy. The only way to get access to them is to adopt them. Hilarity and heart warming moments naturally ensue.

I guess that sounds a bit dismissive, but DM is a really good kids movie. It has comedy for all ages, a well written story (predictable, but what kids movie isn't?), and excellent voice acting. The cast features
Steve Carell as Gru along with Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett and Kristen Wiig.

Did I mention the 3D? This was made with 3D in mind, and it is used well throughout the movie. The highlight is a fantastic theme park sequence, and make sure to stick around during the end credits. I predict they will become a staple demo reel for 3D TV sets.

It isn't quite up to Pixar standards, but it is as close as anyone has come IMO.

Long live the console war! Buy 'em all! Just don't give Sony any of your Personal info!

The problem here is that 3d was the focus of the movie. With toy story 3d was used to add to the film (witch is how it should be). Take a look at avatar, it was a huge 3d success because the movie was not based around being 3d but rather it was the first movie to use 3d to add to the film.

I dissagree. I think 3D was well used and the movie was the best vehicle for it. It had funny moments troughout the movie with the minnions which reminds me of the small cartoon you find in the page margins of MAD magazine.

I watched it in 2D and didn't feel like I was missing anything. Enjoyed it.

Ordinarily he was insane, but he had lucid moments when he was merely stupid.

I watched DM in 3D and aside from the aforementioned theme park sequence and the ending credits, there didn't seem to be any need for this movie to be in 3D. I didn't feel immersed in the world of the film the way I did with Avatar.

Great movie overall, but the 3D isn't very immersive.

cheers,

I agree.

I think this is the way 3D is supposed to be used. Just to add depth and nothing poking out unnecessarily (except the end credit... which "pokes" fun of 3D - yes, the pun IS intended).

The minnions, if you've played Ravin' Rabbids on Wii, you'll be reminded of them more than the page margin cartoons.
