Traveling and know shouldn't be using hotel or airport hotspots for checking the bank account with the laptop but would tethering through the USB cable to the cell phone and connecting to the internet over it's mobile connection be any more secure?
To play it safe (paranoid?), VPN into your home router (or any other VPN terminating hardware/software).
And connect to the bank after that. This way it is as secure as if you do it from home...
The big question: is your home ISP more secure than using a LTE connection? I'm not so sure it is. The main thing is you want to make sure the computer/device that you're using isn't compromised by malware and that you've got a SSL connection with your bank.
