I received a notice from my apartment building, who bundles basic cable into my rent, and was told that Shaw needs to install digital boxes to remain receiving basic cable. Makes no difference to me since I already have a HD PVR, an HD box (awaiting a new TV to hook it up to as it is a rental) and a SD box. But here in Lloydminster are they phasing out analog cable altogether or did my apartment building make this decision?
If so, does this mean that Lloydminster will finally receive all the channels Shaw offers elsewhere such as Canadian Timeshifting and Superchannel? I would assume this would be a solution to the finite capacity issue as I understand that digital has a higher capacity (possibly infinite like IPTV) and could carry all of these channels without a capacity issue.
I was at my dentist's office yesterday at Polo Park in Winnipeg. They have TVs mounted in the ceilings above the chairs for checkups and cleanings and I noticed the big red crawl at the top of CNN saying that a digital box would be required. I can't imagine they would try to retrofit boxes into the ceiling so they would probably switch to Basic.
It sounds like Shaw are getting ready to pull the plug on the analog tiers in the west end of Winnipeg.
I thought all of Winnipeg had been switched over. Here in EK and I'm sure all of east Winnipeg has been switched over for about a year now. Shaw must be taking it slow because i thought this would have all been done already.
Mixar69, I know a node in the Crestview/Sturgeon Creek area was just done late last year - a relative decided it was a good time to switch to MTS.
The St. James/West End area still has analog tiers - for now. I'm not sure of the status of the other parts of the old Videon territory "west of the Red".
I really don't understand the approach of converting channels to digital neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Cogeco and Rogers did entire cities at the same time. They must be doing some other upgrades at the same time other than just eliminating analog channels.
Not sure about Cogeco, but Rogers is only doing a gradual shut down by migrating one or two analogue channels a month. They are not suddenly migrating entire cities to digital only.
For anyone interesting in the Saskatoon situation ... I heard from tech that "Downtown" will start the DNU in the next few weeks and is scheduled for a July completion ... They have no schedule for all residential areas outside of the downtown core.
^ This is correct, also Rogers is a little bit different in that they are using DTA50 adapters for a cheaper alternative. The logistics behind converting a city overnight would be overwhelming. The amount of channel conversions is also significantly less (just one tier to start) Also a few other at a time
Still no sign of when this will be reality in my part of south west Calgary. The last time I made a direct enquiry to [shaw]sean I was given a prediction of March, not sure what year.
No television banners, no apparent excess activity of Shaw trucks, nothing getting dug up, no contractors pulling cable.
It could be all network equipment upgrades at this point but all that goes through my head any time someone mentions the Shaw DNU to me is either the Jeopardy theme or the sound of crickets chirping.
Envirogeek, I am in the NW part of Calgary by Market Mall and the DNU was done in my area in the fall of 2011. It just shows you how slow Shaw is on this.
I'm curious if the DNU is complete in all areas of Winnipeg now. Is anyone in Winnipeg still receiving the tier channels in analog (channels 14-44)?
It seems that east of the Red River, Crestview, St. James and West End are complete. Is there anyone downtown or in the northwest part of Winnipeg that can check?
Dr. Dave:
St James - Polo Park was done sometime between Sunday and Thursday the 25th. I suspect on Thursday as our Gateway channel mapping was screwed up when we turned in on for the Jets Game.
Our old analog TV now only receives 2 thru 13 (plus a few others). (No more "free" AMC SD on channel 40, as seen on our old pre-digital PVR.)
Coquitlam's Austin Hub in my area got the upgrade today. I have been waiting a long time to get those extra channels and they appeared today (MC2,3 and radx, hifi, and equator). Also got a channel that says you need to subscribe to, available in hd on 235 Sportsnet World.
I just checked with Shaw and apparently phase 1 of the upgrade has been completed in my area. I thought that this would allow me to get BB250, but when I asked about it. They told me that this is with the phase 2 rollout. So good news I at least have part of it completed.
Still no DNU in my area of Saskatoon (Wildwood). So price increase coming and still not receiving the full service from Shaw.
