On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg nears the end of its transatlantic voyage as it approaches its final destination just outside New York. Suddenly, disaster strikes. Out of the blue, the pride of the German air industry explodes spectacularly into flames as it tries to moor. In a matter of seconds, the huge leviathan is consumed by fire, tragically killing 36 passengers and crew.
“Hindenburg: Titanic of the Skies” is a docudrama that explores all aspects of the iconic disaster, from the people on board and the sophisticated engineering of the ship, to the conspiracy theories surrounding its fatal demise. This two-hour special tells the Hindenburg’s story from its launch a year earlier to its final voyage. Through dramatic recreations, accompany the passengers and crew as they set out on this infamous last trip and explore the airship through their eyes and experiences. This special also features rarely seen archive footage, plus interviews with the only two survivors still living today.
