600 MHz Spectrum Auction

Press Release:
Canadians deserve affordable, high-quality wireless service with dependable coverage in town and out

Consultation launched for 600 MHz spectrum auction to support high-quality networks and business opportunities for all regions.

Through this consultation, the Government is proposing measures to support competition and encourage investment in wireless services.
Interested parties will have until October 2, 2017, to comment on the proposals outlined in the Government of Canada's consultation paper.

Low band spectrum, such as the 600 MHz band, is well suited to carrying signals over long distances. It is also less affected by building structures than higher frequency bands, making it ideal for next-generation wireless services in both urban and rural settings.

This thread is to discuss the 600 MHz spectrum for wireless services. To discuss the impact on the OTA UHF channels in this band, please use this thread:

I'd like to see more come from this auction than yet another rape of the Canadian public by large telecommunications companies. Would including stipulations such as providing reasonably priced data services for all Canadians be too much to ask? How about a sunset clause on spectrum usage if conditions are not met? meanwhile, I have low expectations.

Federal government favours small players over Big Three...

Large telecom carriers in Canada are barred from bidding on more than 40 per cent of the airwaves used to carry cellular signals in an upcoming auction, the federal government announced yesterday.

This will help existing companies, such as Freedom, but will there be new companies as well? If so, how long will they last, before being bought up?

I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...
