How to tell if radio station is licensed?

For quite a bit now, there is a fairly low power station in Calgary broadcasting reggae music at night on 102.7. It's 2nd adjacent to XL103 (103.1) but I'm guessing due to its low power it isn't interfering much; otherwise I'm sure others would have noticed.

My question is how to tell if the station is licensed or not. It's kind of surprising to see a station that only broadcasts at night with (from what I can tell) no carrier signal during the day

The only station on 102.7 MHz in Alberta is French CBC/ICI Radio Canada re-transmitter in Lake Louise, CHFA-FM. There is no other legal FM station in Alberta on 102.7 MHz.

You could try Industry Canada.

I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

Interesting..... Nothing listed on that page. The ones behind the station have a Facebook page too, and it mentions they broadcast from 6pm-6am weekdays and all day weekends.

Perhaps the timing is to try avoiding Industry Canada from shutting them down as workers probably aren't working weekends?

Edit - website too.

FIWE is not a proper call sign according to Canadian standards, meaning its likely this station is unlicenced.

If the pirate is playing decent music, just leave it alone

There is also an Allotment (so, therefore not licensed to anyone yet) in the Broadcasting database for a 50kW Class B on 102.7 in Bonnyville, but that's not that close to Edmonton. (Also the coordinates are not actually in Bonnyville, but in the middle of nowhere halfway between Bonnyville and Fort Mac.)
I suspect if one of the licensed broadcasters complained, these guys would be shutdown.
How wide ranging is the signal?

What if the Pirate was playing your songs and your an artist, you deserve some compensation for your music being played, no? no one wants to work for free.

Not very wide from what I can tell, but I don't have a car and haven't taken transit with the portable radio lately (especially when the signal is live). As for music, it's ok, but audio quality isn't great - and the DJs talking over parts of songs is annoying.

Even the website doesn't give a professional vibe, so it wouldn't surprise me if these guys just found a cheap transmitter and broadcasting equipment and are just doing their own thing. As for other interference, I luckily haven't noticed any, but then all I could possibly test is interference with XL 103.

Considering how long they have let the pirates in Toronto, ON go on that TV station there,
think IC could care less what happens in podunk, AB

Hey! Calgary is the largest city in Alberta...... LOL!

(admittedly not as large as Toronto)

^^^^
And if they don't care what happens in the centre of the universe...

A big part of the problem is a result of Harper gutting the government departments to the point they're incapable of doing their jobs.
