2017 Christmas Format Flips and Websteams

The very first Canadian radio station to flip this year is CKRA-FM broadcasting at 96.3 FM in Edmonton, Alberta. The station is owned by Newcap Broadcasting and is now called Capital 96.3, Edmonton's Official Christmas Station.

Capital 96-3

It flipped from a classic hits format.

Star 102.5 out of Buffalo, NY that has a pretty strong signal across the GTA is playing holiday music 24/7 now...

Strange as last year they made a point of waiting until after Veterans/Remembrance Day to make the switch...

WNIC 100.3 out of Detroit switched this morning, which is later than usual. They usually switch a few days after Halloween.

A small note, I just tuned in to verify if they did switch before I posted this and I had to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait. Over 7 straight minutes of ads......

Just 7 minutes? American radio is getting bad for having the announcers do ads lately.

They all go something like this:

"Hi, this is (insert DJs name here) and I want to tell you about a great experience I had. (Insert time period here) I went to (insert business name here) and had an amazing experience! (Insert manager's name of business here) and his/her team of skilled professionals are the best around, and I recommend them to all my friends and family. (lines of random junk about how great they are). Make sure you tell the people at (business name) that (DJs name) sent you in and hope you have a great experience like I did"....

I think the one sports station I listen to from Buffalo has these same commercials 3 or 4 times in a row. They are all scripted the same and pathetic. When I travel in the U.S., it seems to be a common format - and I don't hear them in Canada.

We get about 2 Xmas songs, 1 minute of yaking, and then 10 minutes of scripted commercials on 102.5 out of Buffalo...

Well it was 7 minutes at least since the ads were already playing when I tuned in.

I hear some of those ads on some of the Detroit stations. One of the sports channels has "live reads" the host will read a script (with a tiny bit of ad-lib) selling you a service or for a store. The advertisers pay extra for that. It was weird at first but I'm used to it now. A few of the Windsor stations have ads that sounds like the advertiser is being interviewed which I dislike more.

Back on topic now... WOMC 104.3 tends to switch over on the Friday following their Thanksgiving but didn't last year, not sure what will happen this time around.

I find it interesting that a lot of the stations are either in the NE, or northern U.S. that have flipped formats. Looking forward to seeing if this is a trend.

CKDO out of Oshawa has flipped to Christmas music, I believe yesterday. First Canadian station in the GTA to do so. Enjoying the music on CJKX HD-3, since the FM signal doesn't reach into my area
