CKOC AM 1150 Hamilton Becoming TSN (TiCats, Leafs, Raptors)

Recently CKOC (AM radio in Hamilton, Ont.) was bought by Bell Media. Since then, they've started changing the format, including a lot of music that really does not fit in. However, what's much worse is they're now playing irritating ads for the various BM television shows. This, coupled with the changes in music is causing me to turn them off more and more. I'm not that far from turning them off permanently.

I was wondering why they started playing alot of schlocky 80's stuff. Too bad, they use to be really good.

I was tuning around AM very early this morning and heard an eighties song on CKOC and thought, ummmm.... this song deserves FM stereo and better sound.

Me thinks they're trying to kill it off so they can right it off as a loss.

Is it my imagination, or are they backing away from some of the format changes? The music seems less irritating lately. I can actually go a half hour now without turning them off.

At this moment, the dead air is deafening... :-)

It was on earlier, but seems to have gone into the ether...

Hope that doesn't happen during a football game...

Edit: Came back on later in the evening...

I've yet to see any type of station or channel acquired by Bell Media that didn't take a rapid turn for the worse. Bell's first act is usually to chop local staffing and the budget in half. The second is to replace seasoned staff with inexperienced, recent college graduates, slash local news production and move all other production to Toronto. What's left is typically a shell operation designed to meet minimal CRTC requirements and pump up the head office bottom line at the expense of local operations.

Exclamation CKOC AM 1150 Hamilton Becoming TSN Hamilton (sports)

I've heard that CKOC is going to become TSN Radio in the near future. Not really sure why they would put another TSN Radio station in this area since 1050 CHUM covers Hamilton and area well.

TSN Radio 1150 to launch in Hamilton - Article - TSN

Here is how TSN explain of why then need a TSN radio in Hamilton while TSN Toronto is hearable in Hamilton: They need an all-sports radio station for Hamilton Ti-Cats so they don't need to screw the Argonauts Fans on CHUM.

P.S.Not sure how CKOC covers in Toronto but the statment did claimed CKOC did provide a number of Raptors and Maple Leafs games coverage while SN590 is the official station of those teams in Toronto. My two cents is both coverage will be produced by TSN instead of simulcast from SN590 so they can earn some credits on radio coverage for both teams while they were unable to do it on CHUM.

Bell's real motivation for TSN radio in Hamilton will be to increase advertising revenue. Advertisers pay big money for major league air time. Hamilton Ti-Cats fans in the entire GTA CKOC coverage area will be listening.

As mentioned in the CKOC thread (starting at Post 7), Bell has announced that they will be converting CKOC Oldies 1150 to TSN Radio 1150 in the fall (my presumption is labour day). The station will be home to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and will also air Leafs and Raptors games (unclear if this will be just the games that air on 1050 or if they will also get the Sportsnet games as a network affiliate since Hamilton is technically its own DMA).

Not sure how much simulcasting they will do with TSN Radio 1050 from Toronto, as I see this more as how Vancouver has TSN Radio 1040 (CKST) and 1410 (CFTE), as they both air different programming, with one more local based and the other relying more on ESPN radio.

@swan_ch -

That is only half true. CJCL and CHUM are both the official broadcasters of the Leafs and Raptors as both BCE and Rogers own an equal 37.5% share.

As far as CKOC carrying Leafs and Raptors games, expect nothing more then a network affiliate. Reception from both CJCL and CHUM is inconsistent in Hamilton.

IMHO Hamilton doesn't have enough demand for an all-sports station. They are wedged between the two aforementioned Toronto stations, and WGR in Buffalo. This is in addition to the various satellite talk stations.

CKOC has the radio rights to the Ticats. CHML still has the rights to the OHL Bulldogs and CIS Marauders.

CKOC doesn't have enough local content to program 16 hours a day. They'll have to carry some network or syndicated programming.

A lot of people seem to think that CKOC will carry a lot of ESPN Radio content similar to how one of the TSN Radio stations in the Vancouver market does.
