CN Tower Transmitters Offline

Due to a fire at the base of the CN Tower antenna, all TV and FM transmitters are offline. The news said it was a smoking cable. The fire department needs to put out the fire then the cable can be repaired. This might take a while.

^^^^ almost... :-)

The FM stations are almost as strong as before, but NO HD Radio on 99.9 and 104.5MHz as of yet.

I'd suspect that as this is being repaired, there will be periods of low power, downtime and other side effects, like I've noted above for both TV and radio station OTA operations.

I read on CBC that some channels moved their signal to back-up towers that will not have the same coverage.

I live in Fort Erie, and can confirm that I could not get any Toronto signals this morning. I can always get TVO, CBC, and Radio-Canada with no issues, therefore, the signal may have shifted to a tower on another building.

I am not sure how many stations have back-up towers, and if they are fully capable.

I will check my signal when I get home tonight.

From the ISED Broadcasting Database, CTV, CBC, and the three Rogers stations have auxiliary transmitters. However, only the Rogers antennas are on a different tower (probably First Canadian Place).

My signals were back to normal in Fort Erie yesterday evening when I checked at 6pm.

Good work by those working at the CN tower to get the stations back up and running for us in the fringe areas of reception!

so, whodunnit?

I'm curious which broadcaster's equipment was the source of this fault. Broadcast Dialogue's Weekly Briefing newsletter noted:
Quote:
the only damage was to the one cable and a team from the broadcaster that owns it will be called in to investigate the unusual event... all stations are back up and running on full power, with the exception of the affected broadcaster
Owing to the constantly distracted attention span of news media, any follow-up reporting is unlikely. Assuming it wasn't the master FM radio feedline, it was either CBC/TVO, Shaw/Rogers (Global/City/OMNI), or Bell (CTV). Probably Canada Lands Company, who owns the tower, wants to remain tight-lipped on finger-pointing, as if naming the particular broadcast tenant would damage their reputation with the negative publicity.

It is interesting that the HD Radio Broadcasts on two affected FM frequencies haven't returned. I find that intriguing...

Draw your own conclusions...

These companies are always crying about how they can't afford to build this or that
area for DTV. But they can afford redundant transmitters...seriously??

They should remove the backup transmitters entirely and install them someplace else that doesn't have any DTV at all.

Suspicion confirmed: the folks on the SOWNY forum say:
Quote:
the Bell independent HD antenna for 99.9 and 104.5 burned... they were running 2 GV-30s into it one for each HD frequency
I'm not at all surprised that the culprit was Bell. Figures. Now they'll probably use unexpected transmitter site fires as another excuse when whining to the CRTC about their oh-so-prohibitive costs of being a broadcaster.
I did a quick search on the CRTC's website and couldn't find any application... maybe HD radio simulcasts only need ISED authorization?? It'd be fun to read/scrutinize the engineering brief...
According to the ISED Spectrum Management System Search By Call Sign or Station Location, CHUM & CKFM's shared HD antenna is 27.7 metres higher up the mast than its analog FM complement, probably somewhere in the area where CBC's former TV channel 5 antenna used to be located; interesting diagram here.

^^^^^^ Sounds like a major ooops...

There is a minor technical error stated in that actually 4 frequencies would have been ploughed into that antenna, but I digress....

At this juncture, I'd suggest if HD Radio discussions were to continue, here might be more appropriate area:
