I would go through warranty, these players haven't even been around for a year, so should be no problem getting a replacement.

Leaving aside the reliability and quality control, we finally have a trusted place review the player.
The Toshiba is only outclassed by players like the Oppo DV-981HD that cost nearly three times more.

Just don't use component...

Try this link the other appears broken

Basically its a very good player for the price. The XDE feature is pretty useless. It gives a very good DVD picture but it can't make a DVD into a Blu Ray and there is a noticable difference in picture.

Certainly would consider one if looking for a DVD only player if I didn't already have an HD DVD

In conclusion, base on this review it seems like the audio codecs are worth nearly 5 stars however, when it comes to the video up-scaling it is good bang for the buck but it seems to fail on what Toshiba actually promised and therefore could well be a deception for most videophile. Thank god I have a few HDDVD players and do not need to acquire such a player. Good job from Toshiba to create an affordable up-scaler but that is about it. Let's only hope the video problems mentioned in this thread can be overcomed with times.

Thumbs up

Hey guys !

I just bought a XD-E500 a week ago.

My main player is a Toshiba HD-A20 HD DVD player but since it does not play DivX and we do watch lots of downloaded shows/movies I wanted the cheapest DivX player out there !

The XD-E500 was basically $10 more than the cheapest upconverting player at BB/FS so I went for it.

I can't say I see much difference upconverting compared to my HD-A20 and from what I read ther HD-A20 does upconversion nicely so it's a good thing for the XD-E500

I leave the XDE picture modes off most of the time but even so the result is excellent on my 42" Aquos.

I'm very happy with how it performs.
