Any Suggestions for a Sub? $500 Max

Hello - I'm a newbie to this, so thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I'm looking to buy a new sub for my set up. I've narrowed it down to 2 - Polk Audio DSWPRO 660wi 12 inch ($425.00) or Tannoy subwoofer ts 1001 ( on sale for $299 (from $999.00 at London Drugs) I'm open to your suggestions, my budget is $500.00 max.

My reciever is the Onkyo HT-RC370, Polk Audio Tsi 400's as my front Polk Audio CS 20 as centre and 4 Polk in ceiling speakers for surround. TV is a LG LED.

The room is about 14 wide and 17 in length and ceiling is 10ft..

The guy at Visions is pushing their house brand Soungstage, but I didnt care for it. Could someone pass on some suggestions for a good sub? Its 75 percent for Movies and TV 25% for music.

I can't vouch for a Tannoy. $500 isn't much in Canada for sub shopping. I already checked sonicboomaudio and there was nothing close to your budget there (SVS subs).
Internet direct (ID) is usually the way to go for best bang for buck subwoofers, but being in Canada stinks for availability in this area. About a year ago, eD had the best (relatively speaking) shipping/duty to Canada. The A2-300 might be your best bet for $415 plus shipping/duty/tax, whatever. Might be worth giving them a call.
Otherwise, what I would do in your case is is:
  • Watch your local Kijiji ads for a used one (craigslist, etc too)
  • Watch Futureshop for a killer sale on a 'brand' name
  • Check
With that low a budget, take your time and don't rush, but be ready to pounce when the opportunity arises. Last option would be a DIY kit. Find a buddy to help you build it.

+1 to caper_26's post. Not that they come up for sale all that often, but a gently-used SVS PB10-NSD or PB12-NSD would be a terrific sub to snag. (An older Paradigm PW-2200 or Servo-15 v1 would be sweet, too.)

You have 10' ceilings - is your HT space on the main floor of a house or in a loft-style condo? If the former, the suspended floor will allow for tactile "floor effect" (vibration transmitted through the joists), which will help an average sub feel like a better performer than it might otherwise be.

In that case, a Klipsch Sub-12 - when on sale for $300 - would be a decent choice.

I picked a Klipsch RW-10D for $300 at a FS sale about 18 months ago.
I suggest checking the Big Box stores for sales.Sometimes they have really good prices on name brand items. If you can, be patient and check prices often.

Many websites (FS, BB, etc) have a "notify" option if an item reaches a certain pricing threshold.
