Ontario Electricity Prices, May 1, 2017

Due to proposed government legislation, electricity prices will be going down. These are the interim prices until the legislation passes. See link below for additional details:

https://www.oeb.ca/sites/default/fil...p_20170420.pdf

TOU: November 2016, May 2017 (decrease)

Off-peak Price: 8.7¢, 7.7¢ (11%) I hate that this off-peak has the lowest decrease
Mid-peak Price: 13.2¢, 11.3¢ (14%)
On-peak Price: 18.0¢, 15.7¢ (13%)

There is also the 8% GST rebate that took effect in January 2017 "on top" of the above decreases. More decreases to come once the legislation is approved I guess.

Remember that after adding in all the other charges and taxes on your Electricity bill, the above numbers are "almost" doubled depending on your usage patterns and total usage. The vast majority of consumers now have smart meters.

And just in time for an election. It feels like deja vu all over again. (See pre-election tax cuts in the 1970s.)

I read something about how Ontario is effectively lengthening the amortization period of debt to achieve short term cost decreases in power prices - although it will of course increase the total amount paid for those capital investments.

Is that change behind the decrease in prices seen here?

I wonder what the lessons from Ontario are for the rest of the country.

Is there anyone alive who doesn't see through this scam? She is just borrowing money to amortize our Hydro bills decades into the future, costing us billions of dollars extra in interest.
