An extra $7 to get movie channels 7-pak without a group. Make absolutely no sense why they even bother keeping this option.

Also 5-pak going up $2+ and 7-pak only $1?

Building in the HD groups cost I guess. Time to drop a group or 2 to offset the $6 increase here.

It is interesting that all the groups being increased have at least one HD channel.

It is also interesting that the News, People, and Places groups are not includede even though they also have HD channels.

This change definitely explains the move away from selling theme groups in blocks of three though as it gives them the ability to charge seperately for them.

At the end of the day I still like this structure better than the old system where you had to pay one fee for a large HD gruop regardless of the number of channels you had access to.

It does still bother me though that MTS is charging to the PVR and STB when there is no purchase/free with contract offer like Shaw routinely has.

Anyone have any insight into when the next batch of new channels/packages might roll out? I know MTV, Slice, W, Lifetime, H2 and Teleton have launched in HD. Cosmo has been announced as coming soon in HD and Prime will likely be adding an HD feed and dropping timeshift when it rebands to DTour on Aug 26th.

Add in that Cartoon Network Canada has been on free preview here forever as it has not been really placed into a package yet. Further, Sportnet taking over The Score may warrant a split of the double sized sports group into a SportsNet group and a group with the balance.

With all these possible changes it really feels like there are a backlog building that is usually addressed through a channel/group overhaul.

Edit: Just heard that with Fox launching their comedy spin off of FX in the states, FXX, will see a similar channel launch here by Rogers called FXX Canada. If this is done as a channel rebranding it would likely be G4. This is also likely bring a HD version of the channel at the same time.

May 2014 Price Changes (Mostly Increases)

Effective May 2014 MTS TV prices are changing as follows:

Basic service increases by $3 to $44.50 but the first set top rental is included.

All theme groups increase by $0.50 each except:

Sports Fan - $1 more to $7
B4U from $15.99 to $6
CBN from $14.99 to $6
belN Sports from $19.99 to $14.99

The change to basic service has no impact if you do not have a credit for the box rental but is effectively an increase if you have one.

There are no channel additions listed.

As of your May 2014 bill, the price will increase for Basic TV Service. Your 1st Set-top box will now be included in the monthly price for TV service. If you are not already receiving a credit for your 1st Set-top box, your monthly price for Basic TV service plus one Set-top box will remain the same.
It sounds like this is a price increase of $3 for those people that had 2 STBs and free PVR for life a few years back.

TV Service |Old price|New price
Basic TV Service |$41.50 |$44.50
1st HD Set-top box |$3.00 |$0
Total |$44.50 |$44.50

Note that Classic TV is also going up by $3 to $44.50.

News channel changes

It looks like MTS is making these changes to comply with the recent CRTC ruling re: news channels.

Effective May 15, CTV News Channel is also available as a Pick & Pay.

LCN is moving from channel 402 (Divertissement group) to channel 138 (News group).

RDI and CBC News Network are changing channel numbers to put them with the news channels, but will still be part of Basic.
RDI moves from 27 to 139
CBC News Network moves from 15 (SD)/1015 (HD) to 140/1140.

Sun TV must still be under negotiation.
