Didn't see a thread so I thought I would start one, mostly to ask whether anyone knows when CBC will be coming out with their schedule? It begins unofficially in five days and there seems to be nothing on the CBC website in terms of what sports are on what channel, what is available online, and who is hosting and when.
On my OTA tuner, I noticed that CBC (CBLT Toronto) has programming just for the Opening Ceremonies, and the rest of the schedule during the Olympic broadcasts is "TBD" for the first week.
The NBC (WGRZ Buffalo) guide goes out the first week of the Olympics, and has all the events listed per each programming session.
I assume CBC will update as the games goes on - the last few Olympics, they tended to only have a generic program such as "Olympics Daytime" with no events listed until the day before. I assume that CBC will swap events between themselves and TSN/RSN if Canadian athletes are doing well.
Yes, Yes, and Bernie Ecclestone's mother in law was kidnapped this week for something like a $40 million ransom. Oh, and the athlete who was forced by the cops to go to an ATM and take out a bribe for them.
Wonder who will have a 4K feed none stop? I know there is suppose to be a 24 hr delay on certain events/ The opening will feature product placements like Off and mosquitoe netting. Should look nice in 4K.
The tab marked "schedule" is the broadcast schedule, for example: Saturday Aug 5 for archery, there's coverage at 9AM, 2PM, 3:43 PM and 4:39 PM (medal match). The main CBC channels on Bell Fibe/Fiberop and Bell Sat have Olympic coverage from 7 AM to 1 AM daily. TSN also have a couple of channels with continuous coverage.
There's a CBC Olympic App you can download. Haven't seen any explicit mention of on-line streams but I'm sure they'll show up as we get closer to the start of the games.
The CBC Olympic app so far has nothing but promotional/fluff stories for the games. I'd expect that to change as this week progresses. The APP is supposed to give us live streams of events also being shown on TV and of non-broadcast events as well. The CBC usually does events like this very well so I'm looking forward to their coverage.
Getting back to the original question. I agree. This has to be the latest that the TV schedule has ever been released. At the previous games we all had access by now to the Canadian broadcaster's tentative plans on a day by day basis. Things seem to be slower this year.
Watch Canada's women vs. Australia in Sao Paulo on CBC television. You can also watch the rest of the matches, including, the United States versus New Zealand (9:00 p.m. ET), streamed live at cbc.ca/olympics and on the CBC Rio 2016 app.
CBC APP on my tablet (Android) now has a schedule up but it's not too useful
- No indication of whether times are ET or shown for your own time zone
- No indication of where the event is being televised (CBC, Sportsnet, TSN etc.)
- Opening and closing ceremonies aren't even included in the schedule (I guess because they're not sports).
Overall the APP seems a bit clumsy and amateurish. There are no personalised settings other than notifications. Of course up to now all the content is canned. When the live action starts the APP might actually be OK as a viewing platform. Who knows?
There is much better information at the CBC website which corrects all the flaws mentioned above. However, when it comes to streaming to our "devices" (hate that word), there is no indication at the website of whether or not the stream can be "cast" from your phone/tablet/PC to your TV. This was something I could not do all winter for the Saturday night CBC hockey telecasts. I guess I'll find that out later today when the first events (soccer/football) are shown.
@ticky: Thanks for the update on casting. It looks to me like the CBC still sees the internet streaming as "competition" to their real business of TV broadcasting and want to keep some restrictions on the new technology.
Having the access to events that get little coverage on regular TV is nice but if I have to settle for a tablet screen when the tech. exists to cast it onto my big new 65 inch UHD TV not so nice.
(My last post on the subject of casting before this gets too OT. )
I just downloaded the CBC Rio 2016 iOS app on a iPad and it seems to work well. Also, I see the Google Cast (nee Chromecast) icon in the corner, so I can presumably stream any of these to TVs that support the protocol.
CBC apparently decided to implement their own "skin" for their HTML5-based video players, and I guess they didn't consider Google Cast support when they did that. On my own websites I prefer using the default <video> tag UI that comes with each browser. That way you don't need to support every new random feature that all the browsers decide to implement at any given time. Just do the <video> tag with a source, a "poster" image, and various other metadata and call it a day. Your video player UI doesn't need to be a special snowflake.
One last post on the cast subject. It seems there is a difference between the CBC IOS and Android APPS that we will all need to be aware of during these Olympics. IOS includes Chromecast (ref. audacity) while Android does not. I can confirm that after watching the Canada - Australia Women's soccer match this afternoon on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablet.
Please Dr. Dave or someone where is there a schedule for the CBC French TV? Sometimes I think the French TV shows more horse events, we don't care if we cant understand the ppl talking. Thankyou.
@Bayguy here is the French site. I don't know if there is a comparable list of events on French TV. I happened to stumble on the English article in the news section.
Just a heads up. I've been watching CBC Olympic coverage using the Android App and Chromecasting to the TV. Things have been working moderately well. Had to restart the opening ceremonies a few times, but thing have worked well so far today.
Does anyone know if CBC is broadcasting anything in 4K yet? All I get on the channel (95 on Optik) is the promo screen and they've not shown anything at all today.
I'm using Microsoft Edge (new version of Internet Explorer) to cast CBC games to my TV using DLNA technology. Your TV has to be connected to internet, that's all.
Why does CBC ranks Canada by number of medals instead of # of Golds? Canada is ranked 17th but according to CBC is 9th !!!!
Because that's one of the methods used to do it. Often used when the gold count is not what they want to showcase, like in 2008 when the US won total medals but China won most golds.
