Component vs HDMI for HD Sports

I have a 40 " Sony Bravia which supports up to 1080i, and I watch my HD sports using a component cable, if I buy an HDMI cable would I notice a difference in quality, or is it even worth it to upgrade to an HDMI cable?

You will likely not see a difference, provided the TV is properly calibrated for each input. See:

If you decide you wish to try HDMI, you can usually purchase a cable for about $20 from a computer store, or even less online.
