Glad to hear your Toshiba tuner works well. I have read that not all ATSC tuners built into the set are created equal.
I'm using a Humax HFA 100 set top box. When I get my antenna up I'll post some results. Based on the results of fellow DHC'ers strung out across Bovaird, I'm hoping for big things.

Brampton Newbie Needs Advice

Hello everyone.

I'm new to the world of OTA antennas. I've called around to some vendors looking for some input on the best antenna set-up for my situation. And of course they always want you to go big and expensive. I live in Brampton and want to pick up all the local channels here in TO, from 2-69. If I can get more, that is just fantastic. I've read that I can get some US channels too, ie WUTV.

I'm currentyly using FTA, but that is not currenty working and Rogers is just getting a bit expensive, eventhough it's only basic service. I do have HDTV, so, I'm gonna need a hd receiver and an antenna.

Here are some of my choices

CM 4242
CM 3678
CM 3671
CM 3679
CM 3020
CM 4228
WINEGARD PR7052
WINEGARD HD7082
WINEGARD HD8250

Does anybody else have any suggestions. I'm thinking of installing this myself on the side of my house with a 10' x 1.25" diameter pole. Don't like to have a tower on the side of the house, well.. the "boss" won't like it. I've got a good view of the CN tower from the roof. At least, I think it's the CN tower

Any help is appreciated. Also, the places where I can get them.

Hi kneedfreetv, if you are interested in Vhf & Uhf I would go with the CM3020 antenna. Same length as the 3678 but better rated Vhf is 100 miles vs 80.

You would need a rotor if you are considering analog channels. The reason is that on analog if your antenna is not pointed dead on you will most likely end up with some snow, double ghost pictures, and at times multi path interference. Digital tv is not really affected as bad compared to analog signals.

For atsc tuners at times there are members here selling used tuners.

Locally new DigitalStream tuners are $349.00 locally.

You can buy full factory refurb samsung 451 from the US for $150.00us plus shipping etc.

Good luck.

interesting results timmy1. i hope your aware there is a subchanel on WKBW 7-2 called RTN, is a werid oldies station.

unfortanately, FOX's transmitter is powerfull, but directional, and is more difficult to get in many areas these days. I live way down in Niagara, about 20 miles from the transmitter and can only pick it up at 75%. It does suprise me that you have trouble with WNED, their signal as always seemed very reliable and strong.

you said you have a clear view of Hamilton, aim your antenna just a bit to the east of downtown Hamilton (stoney creek) and try to pick up SUNTV 15- which is identical to CKXT-DT in Toronto.

you should be in the perfect location to pick up CHCH-DT when it launches this spring

2-1 and 7-1 fluctuating signal strength, others stay high

Hi Yaamon / Stamp (& others ), sometimes reception for 7-1 and 2-1 jumps up and down from 0 to 36 to 69%. Other channels like CTV/City/23-1/4-1 and fox remain stable (my normal reception is 70-85% with stable audio & video) . I have one of your CM4221 here in Brampton paired with a Samsung STB. Should I check into attenuators or amplifiers?

Hi tataynik, normally you do not need any attenuators if you are using a antenna with no preamp.

Where is your antenna mounted ? If its up high like on the roof then possibly you might need to repeak if your cable run is less than 50'.

When Iam setting up a antenna I usually peak for Nbc and Fox. I do not worry about the Toronto signals as they normall come in if you can get Nbc and Fox.

Another possibilty is cable run, how long is your cable run if you are over 50' try and indoor cable/tv booster where it enters the house and not at the end of the cable run where it connects to the tv.

Good luck, hope one of the tips helps you out.

brampton (mc laughlin and bovaird)

hi guys very new to this

have a cm 4228 just installed this afternoon, point it towards the cn tower as i can visually see it from my roof, went down scan channel and this is what i got

5-1
9-1
23-1
23-2
23-3
25-1
57-1
66-1
(all 5 bars sometimes 4)

and some others channel
(5,7,9,11,13,17,19,23,25,29,36,41,47,49,52,57,69 some of them are not clear)

went up the roof again to see if i can move the signal strength a little higher, i can only go up to five or six bars after moving from side to side.

i'm about 2 ft above the peak of the roof.

wonder if i should make the antenna mast a little longer???????? to get a higher signal strength.

Hi LY68,
Putting the antenna higher is always better. My mast is 12 ft above the peak of my roof, so just a bit higher than the treeline around here.

I see you get 23 digital while pointed at CN Tower. From Brampton, if you point more to the south a bit you should be able to get more buffalo stations. You might be able to get buffalo on the main lobe and toronto stations on the side lobe. If you look up the reception pattern of the 4228, (there is a thread on it here somewhere) you'll see what i mean.
Good Luck!!

Hi LY68,some suggestions in helping you get better reception.

As Tom said using the 4228 you do not need to point it towards he cn tower.

On your roof if you can clearly see the cn tower then move the antenna away from the cn tower and more towards south atleast 10 degrees or more.

Depending on the tuner that you are using 6 bars might be a bit low from local hd channels off the cn tower.

How long is your cable run? If you cable run is less than 65' check your connectors. If you crimped your own connectors make sure that you did not strip off the steel braided wire. This acts also as ground and is very important in making proper connection.

If your cable run that comes into your house is less than 40-50' you can use a regular cable/tv booster there and then attach additional cable length if needed. This will work but not as good as a preamp.

If you intend to hook up more than one tv to the antenna the best setup is a preamp from Channel Master or Winegard.

Good luck.
