Getting started.
I live just north of the Racetrack/Casino, Quinn Rd

I have lived with rabbit ears for years and want to upgrade to an outside antenna system for 3 TVs picking up as much UHF and VHF signals as possible to start with. By living with cheap rabbit ears running two TVs for years, I know I will be very happy with the improvements I will have going to a proper outside Anenna system for analog and digital signals.

I have been reading posts for 2 days now to get myself started and I think I have information overload and there are so amny things to consider.

I have gone to TVFOOL to find out channels and locations.
I understand I probably do not want a long distance setup as most station are fairly close.
I am not sure of the antennas I need for my area/use.

Does anyone live near me that has been doing this for a while who can help me get started?

Cheers,

To fix my Global reception issues here in Russell I have removed the reflector on my CM4221HD (now global is one of my strongest signals).

While I was at it I removed the Delhi VIP302SR and switched the CM7777 preamp back to combined input now that I no longer need a VHF antenna (CJOH comes in fine on the CM4221HD). Still getting the two PBS stations, Fox and CBS with this setup. But oddly now I have lost CTS on 42.1 (not a big loss as far as I am concerned but I might try tweaking the aim of the CM4221HD later to see if I can get it back).

Hello Everyone,

I am brand new at this, so I apologize if I ask obvious questions.

I am living in an apartment building with a balcony in vanier, near mcarthur and irwin miller, and I was thinking of getting an antenna specifically for FOX (because of MLB playoffs). I have been to TV fool, but I'm not sure I understand any of it.

What are the chances I could actually get FOX? Any suggestions on what I would need?

deadwriter, That report doesn't have your location specified accurately (you only used your postal code), but it looks like you don't have enough elevation to receive Fox reliably (it may come in when the conditions are right though, but fall isn't the best time of year fro that). You should be able to pull in most of the locals though, especially if you face more to the south-west rather than south-east (if the later, the camp fortune stations could be of issue as they would be travelling through the building).

Thanks roger1818. In that case, I might go for some less expensive equipment. If I can't get the MLB playoffs, I am content with getting just a few channels. If you have any suggestions on what kind of antenna I should look for I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, thank you so much for your advice already.

deadwriter, The big question is if the CF broadcasts are travelling through your building or not. I would use the TVFool maps tool, satellite view, and move the marker to approximately where your apartment is in the building. Then select "Show lines pointing to each transmitter." Then look if the dark green line towards the north-west is travelling through most of the building or not. If you can let me know, I can help advise you on the best option.

Also, are there any tall buildings to your south that either block the signals from HC (to the south east), or could help by reflecting the signals from CF?

twas strange tropo effects last few days, even though clearly none forecast

was getting all Ottawa channels south of Lancaster, at well over 80%, even with a 91XG pointed 180 degrees opposite, also some stuff from Rochester, Carthage etc...weird even with all the COLD weather

My TV was dropping CTV (13) all night tonight, but if I used my HD Homerun it was just studdering a bit.

So I checked channel 6 (global) which use to be my strongest signal and I can't get a lock. Anyone else having this issue really hoping I don't have to go on the roof to re-aim. I haven't had to touch my setup in 2 years except when the antenna fell over about 4 months ago but even with it half way down I had full signal....
