My new 630 pvr is made by Arris in Taiwan.

Arris acquired the Motorola Home unit from Google back in 2013.

The Motorola 630s were made in Taiwan too.

Chances are they are being made on the same assembly lines by the same subcontractor as well. I wonder if the encryption technology and patents were sold or are being licensed from Motorola/Google.

More than likely sold. AFAIK, Google bought Motorola exclusively for the phone patents and business.

Not directly relevant to Shaw Direct, but certainly could have an impact on any future hardware being planned: Arris sells its Whole Home Solution to Canada's Espial - FierceCable. Definitely relevant to Shaw Cable though.

USB3 and Ext. Drive Marketing & Support

It would be nice if a new Shaw Direct PVR would have a very large internal hard drive and a USB3 output available for an external drive.

I've said it before, SD should market tested compatible external hard drives and enclosures. This would probably cause them lots of trouble/help calls, however.

Content creators/distributors (studios/channels) really don't want people to become hoarders of their content, so will not bend over backwards enabling it.

So any news or updates on this 800 Series Receiver?? I really feel as if this is where Shaw could pull ahead of Bell. Right now I cant see any reason to leave Bell for Shaw but a new Receiver might be what it takes.

This was the response I received back in November when enquiring about new hardware:

"We are indeed currently working on the next generation of receivers. After all, developing new equipment takes a lot of time.
However, this also means it is still a work in progress, and as such, we can't provide any additional information at the moment.

We will make sure to inform our customers when the new generation will have a release date, therefore keep an eye on our website!"

So there is at least something being worked on (which I would expect as the current 6xx series - whilst perfectly serviceable - are not quite in the same league as the whole-home PVR's and X1's of this world).

800 Series Recievers coming soon

Just been hearing that these will be rolling out pretty soon.

Also Shaw will be swapping out older obsolete receivers with refurbished 600 & 630's, now, I don't as yet know if this swap will be free like Bells' was or will involve some kind of payment.

New 800 receivers?

Fake news, wishful thinking or a fact? If it's a fact, source would be appreciated...

The source is a well respected Shaw dealer/Installer.

As soon as I get some paperwork I will post it.

Any idea what the specs will be for this new receiver and if they would be available before the fall season?

I wish I did know more details. All I know is what I have posted so far, they are coming, my feeling is soon, as in within 3 or 4 months but not certain of this at all.

I do know that Shaw stopped supplying Installers with Refurbished 630's and now ship them new ones, so the refurbs can be used for existing customer swaps....
