Had a five minute power failure yesterday and I'm happy to report that my eHDD came back to life without losing any programming or getting any kind of formatting screen like it used to get on my mother's Rogers PVR. I have say that I have had very little, if any, trouble with this new software compared to many others on this board.

I'm like you Gary, I cross my fingers that I won't have any problems later. I did reboot after the update.

I have both my PVRs on a UPS. It helps a lot with brief power outages, like during thunderstorms. The local utility here has a habit of giving us brief outages in the middle of the night as well.

The 600s don't have an eSATA connection, so they won't get DVR at all.
They at most could be streaming client for a DVR.

I bought my 605 with the idea (after talking to a Shaw representative - 2 years ago) that I could make it into a limited PVR like my 6141 and 6131's from Bell. We have Bell in the house and Shaw in the Motorhome (came with an automatic Shaw dish).
I even bought an external drive case with both USB 2 and eSATA.
I am still waiting.

Added an External eSata HD

I added an WD External eSata 1TB PVR Expander HD a few days ago to my HDPVR630. Very easy set up. External HD runs cool & quiet. So far so good. I did a dual recording which went very well. No pixilation etc. Maybe having a external expander HD & therefore having more read/write heads helps in getting a better recording?

My 630 locks up solid once a day now that I've connected a 1.5TB Seagate barracuda.

I'm having issues with my Ext HD, the 630 will not recognize it. I have been working through this with tech support, nothing so far. But while speaking, he mentioned in passing to the end user it looks like a single larger drive. But he also said that when new content starts recording the unit will internally check the drives and will save content to the drive with the most available free space. So existing recordings sill stay where they are but new recordings will go to new drive. And, of course, if 630 dies you cannot get content off of the the ext drive.

Thumbs down Nothing is ever easy...

So....that didn't work at all.

My 630 freezes/crashes soon after restarting it. The little pulsing orange light that moves back and forth during reboots gets stuck on the middle position and stays there, indefinitely. Nothing short of turning off the HDD and unplugging the 630 will get the signal back.

I'm using a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB in an Vantec Nexstar 3 enclosure, but the 630 doesn't seem to like one (or both) of these.

Haven't called tech support yet; I guess that's tomorrow's order of business.

PS. I don't have VOD enabled (no ports left on my router). Someone had mentioned the lack of VOD could cause issues.

DVR Expanders

Three weeks ago I installed a WD My Book AV DVR 1TB Expander. Had it set up in less than 2 min & it has worked great since then. So far no problems at all. Maybe the secret is to use only hard drives that are designed as DVR expanders? I don't have VOD enabled.

I have the exact same DVR expander and have experienced zero difficulties. Works great and I can record and keep so much more. It is awesome!

Same here. The WD My Book AV has worked perfectly. I really don't know why you would want anything much bigger than a 1TB drive? The 630 tend to break down quite often so once you get a new 630 the programming on your eHDD becomes lost when you hook it back up to the new 630.

Newegg dot ca is selling the WD My Book AV for 119.99 plus 12.24 shipping plus taxes and fees. That's about the best price I've seen on this drive.

The one that is on sale for $99.99 at Best Buy is not a DVR expander and it only has a USB interface - you need eSATA to connect it to the 630.

Here is where you can find the one that works:

http://www.amazon.ca/Western-Digital...3604862&sr=8-1

It cost $132.23 plus tax, but has free shipping. It is worth every penny.

The Best Buy one that corvetteguy refers to is on the USA site but they don't ship to Canada.
