New Channels always generate a lot of discussion so this thread is for discussing new channels in 2012.
You're welcome to speculate and discuss new channels coming to Shaw Direct in 2012 but PLEASE unless it's been confirmed by an official press release, be clear about what is speculation and what is fact.
A post saying "a CSR said it was coming" is NOT official, however, it does put it in the "highly" likely category.
If its posted on the CRTC site that its been approved by the CRTC but Shaw Direct has not said anything, I would consider that in the "not very likely at this time" category.
It is just in free preview until further notice. I would assume it will become part of the HD Extra package eventually or as someone mentioned earlier they are planning on launching up to 10 new HD channels by the end of the year so they might be working on new packaging for the HD channels.
Hope they do add more HD channels before Christmas. Just got off the bell site and their current HD CHANNELS definitely doubles what we got......probably even more. Come on SD get with the program!!
I don't understand why I always have to come to this forum, to find out that there is a new channel (although, I certainly appreciate the info! Thank goodness for this forum, it is way more helpful than any assistance I have gotten from SD).
Starchoice sends me their stupid insider report every month and it never says anything about the new channels.
Out of all of the HD channels that they could have added, FX Canada was not my first choice, not my tenth or twentieth. I think it is nice to have the channel, but there were many lined up in front, I think.
I noticed the other night on the Shaw Direct guide that history channels in Standard Def are abbreviated HIST W for west feed and HISTRY for east feed. I was sure HIST E was the abbreviation before on the guide for east. Wonder if Shaw Direct is going to remove the West feed of History just like they did TVtropolis and Showcase? Do notice sometimes that the exact programming is on at the same time anyway.
Got fx as part of the movie theme pack today. Don't mind given i also get walking dead on amc as well now got shaw to redo all my wiring and connections today too. Picture is spectacular now!
mobee: I am not 100% certain but I think that in the case of Hisory it always was History and Hist W. I remember Hist W being added several years ago where History (East) was on Shaw D for years prior to West being added. I had noticed that they never changed History to Hist E on the guide. That isn't to say that more of the duplications won't be going away soon to reclaim bandwidth.
I wonder if Shaw Direct would love to be able to use the 11 SD and 10 HD NHL centre ice channels (not sure how much bandwidth this would represent). I am sure they would like to use the space for other HD channels that subscribers like myself have been asking for daily and weekly.
And that is the tip of the ice berg, there is also another 12 hockey channels (6 HD and 6 SD) TSN Habs, TSN Jets, Sportsnet Canucks, Oilers, Flames and Senators.
Not that we don't like hockey, as we have subscribed to Center Ice the past few years, just too bad that Shaw's hands would be tide to keep this space available whenever the millionaries (both owners and player) decide to get back to playing a game.
These channels don't sit unused. They are used for the PPV channels when there is no hockey or football game. You will notice when Sunday Ticket is going all the PPV channels are "Off the air" except for one.
just noticed on Shaw directs programming change page, that new customers won't get all the channels we used to get in the Essentials package, only home province channels and to get all the locals its now a $5.04 a month timeshift package with the the american west or east depending on your primary choice of feed. and it seems all the packages went up again.
who decide which city to be locals for shawdirect ?it will be interesting to have cities like los angeles, las vegas, san francisco for locals ....why seattle ???
I would guess that they have chosen these U.S. stations (Seattle, Spokane etc) because they are the closest to our border and their news does have some cross border tie ins. If you want different news casts (that's all that would be different , CBS Seattle or L.A. would have the same network shows)check out WGN, KTLA,etc etc.
Has allot to do with nearby uplink centres. It gives Shaw Direct, competition with the local cable companies, in some of the bigger markets. Seattle is a natural for the Vancouver area and when they had Buffalo, it was a natural for Toronto. Over time, they switched off the Buffalo stations, mostly due to technical issues with the picture quality, from Buffalo. It would be interesting, however, to see some more exotic locations for U.S. locals, say New York and Los Angeles, or something similar.
MODS: Posts #329 and on belong in the "programming packages and pricing" thread. Not this "New Channels" thread. Guys, please keep these threads on topic.
I'm having a problem with FX HD which I have a few questions about.
I hsve a DSR-630 and a DSR-530 (I rarely use the 530.) A few weeks ago I noticed FX appear on my 630 on channel 251. Then my 630 died (internal HD failure.) While waiting for the 630 to be exchanged I moved my 530 to my main entertainment center. No FX. I thought maybe it was an issue with the way Shaw was encoding FX and it being incompatible with the 530. No big deal (I thought) I'd just wait for my new 630.
The 630 came and was authorized yesterday. (Before authorization I saw FX in the 'new' guide lineup.) After authorization I got back my 'old' lineup, and no FX (nothing on 251.)
I thought, okay, wait overnight for a more complete download (although everything else in the guide was fine, full two weeks, and I had the latest firmware.) Now it's more than a day since authorization and still nothing listed on 251, no FX.
My questions are: has Shaw removed FX? If not, has anyone else had it disappear? Should it be available on a 530 as well as a 630? Has anyone else experienced something similar?
We have FX Canada on ch 334 (advanced line-up). It disappeared off our I-guide (we have unsuscribed channels hidden) and then came back. We have an HDDSR-605.
Also, what package is NatGeo Wild in??
Wow, you just blew my mind. I too have Digital Indulgence and HD Combo Pack. Since the HD version of NGeo Wild is greyed out I assumed I didn't get it. Couple that with the fact that it's actually not part of HD Combo but rather the HD version is "free" with the SD subscription much like Space or Showcase HD. So I never bothered to just tune in NGEO Wild HD. But after reading your post I tried and ya I get it too. I'm pretty sure we shouldn't though. I think it's a mistake on Shaw's part that I will not call them on.
Thanks for this one Gary!
