This receiver is really ment to bring in customers who are happy with just the basics. If they see how much better HD is maybe they'll get more expensive
programming. It's also to add a 2nd box (in the bedroom etc) with HD,the logic being you allready have HD on your main T.V.

Having that dimmable clock is a great feature on the 500 series +605 & 630

Very useful to glance at the correct time when planning channel changes.

....also a good cross check with our digital clock in the bedroom. NS Power provides an unreliable power supply so it's important to have another LED clock in the bedroom following frequent outages.

505 hd vs Essential HD Receiver

Is there a big difference here between these 2 receivers? I can get the 505 for 50$ vs a brand new Essential for 99$ plus shipping direct from shaw

The 505 is not MPEG4 capable, and MPEG4 format channel will be coming online this fall. Eventually all HD channels will be MPEG4.

Besides that, the 600 has a 14 day IPG with NEW/LIVE program tags, cast info, original air dates and search functions. The 505 has a basic 3 day guide with no search functions. The 600 is about a quarter of the 505 in terms of size. The 505 has a UHF remote and component connections while the 600 does not have these.

If you go with the 505 you will have to upgrade to the 600 series sooner or later (probably sooner).

But, the 600 has HDMI and the 505 doesn't. So by taking the 600 over the 505 you are getting HDMI instead of component for the connection to your TV.

They are in stock at my local Source affiliate store.

I will add the 600 also has an ethernet port.
Unlike the other 6xx receivers, it has an RF out.

Neither Best Buy nor Future Shop had the DSR600 listed on their websites when I checked over the weekend. The Source doesn't list it either (though that's not surprising since - with the exception of some independent dealers - it's owned by Bell).

Will probably be awhile before Best Buy and Future Shop list the 600. They still have a good supply of 209s at $99 they got to get rid of first.

The place that called me from Dawson Creek is an independant, not a big box store. They are also an installer for Shaw Direct, maybe that makes a differance. Best Buy & Future shop may have someone you can contact to
put up your dish but, don't do it themselves. These guys do either way just
sell or, sell and install. Big thing is we are 120klms away and it's a $1 per
klm to come out......I do my own

From the hall of broken promises: I seem to recall SD promising MPEG-4 and 14-day IPG capability for the 505 once upon a time.

I am well aware of ill-fated software upgrade, but the difference is that the 600 actually has the 14 day guide, right now.
