Channels After Cancellation

A friend of mine recently cancelled his Bell Satellite subscription. I went to visit him last week and he told me he still gets certain channels even though he cancelled.

Some of the channels he still gets are TVA, Radio Canada, free preview channels. He might get more but these were some of most notable ones.

We live in northwestern Quebec.

Is this normal? Is he getting these because they are also free OTA?

He does not have an OTA antenna.

I've seen this happen before when channels are on free preview. He is probably getting them because they were on free preview and didn't get cancelled as part of the account disconnection. They will most likely disappear when the free preview ends.

possibly ya. i remember one of my receivers was disabled. and all I could get was free preview channels, so im guessing free preview channels possibly could be picked up by an inactive receiver.

Bell Satellite TV, 9400 HD PVR, 65 Inch LED TV, Smart Blue Ray Player, No sound system.

I thought that by law Bell had to offer certain local channels for free like the OTA channels.

I will get back to him and see if he still has the channels.

Thanks!

There are no mandatory free channels in Canada. I know of no BDU that offers them. There was a free service from Shaw Direct but that expired. Some BDUs have free barker channels that are used for advertising and installation.

I believe shaw direct satellite has:
CTV2 Alberta Standard Def unscrambled as this channel used to be Access Alberta Educational TV.
Barker Channel 299
There may be others.
I think maybe Northern Legislature channel.
Maybe CITY TV Saskatchewan (used to be Provincial Educational Channel)

The CTV2 situation is probably a technical oversight on Shaw's part. I'm not surprised considering some of the technical blunders they did when I was a customer. There may be others but none that I've seen on Rogers, Shaw or Bell or heard of elsewhere. It's typically just one or two barker channels for dish alignment and testing.
