Region surrounding Montreal gets new 579 Area Code

The Telecommunications Alliance has announced that, as of last Saturday, the new 579 area code is now available for new telephone numbers in the 450 area code in Québec.

The industry trade group says the increase in demand for new telephone numbers comes from the increased use of cell phones, wireless data services, the Internet and IP telephony among consumers and businesses alike.

Shaw tops one million landline telephone subscribers

In financial results released today, Shaw Communications announced that it now has over one million customers subscribing to its digital phone service.

As of May 31, 2010, Shaw had 1,044,410 landline telephone customers, up 45.1% from 719,376 a year earlier. The percentage of Shaw Basic cable customers who subscribe to the digital phone service now stands at 44.8%.

905 Region of Ontario to get a third area code

In a Telecom decision handed down today, the CRTC has announced that the 905 region of southern Ontario will be getting a new area code overlay in 2013.

Area code 365 will begin in March 2013 and will be in addition to the 289 area code overlay which was introduced in the original 905 region in 2001.

Shaw announces new long distance rates for Asia

Shaw today announced new long distance telephone rates for digital phone customers calling China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Under the new Asia Unlimited Calling Plan, residential phone customers can now make unlimited calls to landline and mobile numbers in China, Hong Kong and Singapore, and to landline numbers in Taiwan for $6.95 per month.

One in five U.S. homes has no landline phone

In the second quarter of 2009, over one in five U.S. households (21%) reported they are wireless cellular only—an increase of 16% from the past year according to a recent report from Nielsen.

The Nielsen Convergence Report, which surveyed more than 32,000 U.S. online and mail respondents, also found that 88% of all U.S. households now have a wireless phone with the majority maintaining a traditional landline at home.
