Number of U.S. TV Households climbs by a million

The total number of TV households for the 2010-2011 broadcast season in the U.S. will climb to 115.9 million, an increase of one million homes from last year according to Nielsen.

The ratings giant estimates the number of persons age two and older in those households will increase more than two million to 294.6 million people.

Fibre-to-the-Home services launched in Moncton Area

Bell Aliant today announced that it has begun the launch of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the Greater Moncton Area.

FTTH connectivity is notable because it allows telecommunications providers to offer numerous services such as high definition television along with very fast internet speeds.

MTS TV adds seven multicultural channels to lineup

MTS TV, Canada’s largest Internet Protocol television (IPTV) service provider, has announced the addition of seven new multicultural channels to its lineup.

New channels are available to both Classic TV and Ultimate TV subscribers and include Sony Entertainment Television Asia, TV Polonia, TLN en Espanol, RTR Planeta, ProSiebenSat. 1 Welt, Talentvision and Rai Italia.

Jays audience on Sportsnet One down 94%

According to BBM Canada Audience figures, a minuscule 31,000 Canadians watched the Toronto Blue Jays play the Los Angeles Angels on Rogers new SportsNet One television station this past weekend.

That number was 94% lower than the more than 480,000 Canadians who tuned into the Jays versus Angels games on existing Sportsnet regional stations on Friday and Sunday.

One in five Canadians own a PVR

According to a July 2010 survey conducted on behalf of the Television Bureau of Canada, 64 percent of Canadians subscribe to digital television (DTV) and 38 percent of DTV subscribers own a personal video recorder (PVR). Among all Canadian adults, approximately one in five (20%) now own a PVR.

The survey, which polled 1,000 people, also found that five out of six (86%) of PVR owners used the devices to record and view programs at a later time or date.

Flames and Oilers sign 10-year deal with Sportsnet

Rogers Sportsnet have announced a 10-year deal with the NHL’s Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers that would see the broadcaster air at least 116 games per year on its various national and regional Sportsnet Channel.

Financial details of the deal were not announced.

Telus TV Subscribers up 98% in last year

In financial results released last week, Telus announced that as of June 30th, the company had over 228,000 television subscribers in Western Canada. That number is up over 98% from the same time in 2009.

Telus TV lets you use your XBOX 360 as a digital set top box

Telus this week unveiled a great new feature for its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service which allows Telus TV – recently rebranded as Optik TV – subscribers to use an XBOX 360 as a secondary digital set top box.

The company says it’s the first broadcast distributor in North America to offer customers the ability to use an XBOX 360 in place of a television set top box.
