Virgin radio 999 named station of the year
Last week at an industry awards ceremony, Toronto’s Virgin Radio 999 was announced as the Canadian Radio station of year.
Since its inception about 18 months ago, the station which is owned by Astral Media and under license with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Radio International has become Canada’s most listened-to Contemporary Hit Radio station in the 2+ segment.

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), an industry trade group which has lobbied the government on behalf of the Canadian Radio and Television industry is closing up shop in June after more than 80 years in existence.
Andy Barrie retiring from CBC Radio
Andy Barrie, the popular and respected host of CBC Radio One’s 99.1 Metro Morning announced on-air today that he is stepping down from Toronto’s top rated morning radio program.
The 65-year-old broadcaster, who revealed in 2007 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, made the announcement at the end of his show Monday after informing friends and and colleagues in an email on Sunday night.
Vancouver’s AM 650 goes Russian for Olympics
During the Winter Olympics, from February 12th to 28, Vancouver’s “all-time favourites” AM 650 will become Russia’s leading music station, Autoradio.
Broadcast in Russian, Autoradio will feature the station’s morning show personalities playing today’s popular music.
Corus shuts down two Montreal AM radio stations
Corus Entertainment announced today that AM Info690 Montréal and AM940 Montreal’s Greatest Hits will cease operation on January 29 at 7 p.m.
The company said the two AM stations were unprofitable and simply not viable anymore.
CJOY Guelph denied move to FM
In a surprising broadcast decision handed down today, the CRTC has denied an application which would enable radio station CJOY in Guelph to move from the AM band to the FM band.
Corus owned CJOY, which currently operates Oldies music station on 1460 AM, had requested to operate a 9,500 watt station at 95.7 FM.
Canadians spend two hours a day listening to the Radio
According to a recent study by the Radio Marketing Bureau of Canada, the average adult Canadian has a radio on around them for two hours and twelve minutes a day.
The researchers say the amount spent listening to the radio is the equivalent to the results from a similar study done in January 2006.
