Microsoft announces Kinect for Xbox 360
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles (E3), Microsoft announced Kinect for Xbox 360, a controller-free gaming device that is expected to compete with Sony’s upcoming Move controllers.
Formerly know by the code name Project Natal, Microsoft touts the device as superior to the competitionb because Kinect enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to actually touch a game controller.
Sony’s PS3 increases global market share in Q1
Sony’s PlayStation 3 console increased its global market share of current generation consoles to 31% in the first quarter of 2010 according to a report from Strategy Analytics.
The research firm says console sales are typically weak in the first quarter but does provide a useful indicator to the relative performance of competing platforms.

Up to one million users banned from Xbox Live
Microsoft has banned between 600,000 and one million users from their XBox live service. Prior to the ban, the service had over 20 million users worldwide.
The players were cut off from the service because they were using modified game consoles or played games that were illegally downloaded from file-sharing sites, according to the company.
Blu-ray not coming to Xbox 360
When asked by Wilson Rothman of the Gizmodo blog site last week about adding a Blu-ray player to the Xbox 360 game console, Steve Ballmer CEO replied “Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.”
This apparently innocuous response then exploded in the blogosphere as a “revelation” that Microsoft would soon be releasing a Blu-ray player with the Xbox 360.
Consumers planning to spend more on electronics this Xmas
U.S. consumers plan to spend more on consumer electronics this holiday season, as technology garners a larger share of holiday gift budgets, according to a new survey released today by the Consumer Electronics Association. (CEA)
The industry trade group 16th annual Holiday Purchase Pattern Study conducted in September found that four out of five adults (80 percent) plan on buying CE products this holiday season, the highest results in the 16 years of the survey.
Canadian video gamers are an impulsive bunch
The video game industry has been overcome by a wave of impulse purchases fuelled primarily by low prices, creative packaging and online accessibility.
In an August survey of about 2,500 Canadian video gamers, 40 per cent told the NPD Group they had purchased a game on impulse in the past six months despite the recent recession.
