New Apple TV will sell for $119 in Canada

After months of rumours, Apple yesterday announced the new Apple TV, a slimmed down device which will give users in Canada and the U.S. the ability to rent HD movies from the iTunes store. Users in the U.S. will also have the ability to rent select HD shows from ABC, Fox and BBC America.

Apple says the new device will also let users stream content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, as well as music, photos and videos from a Windows PC or Apple Mac.

Best Buy Canada launches retail iPhone app

Best Buy Canada, owners of big box consumer electronics retailers Best Buy Canada and Futureshop, has released two iOS apps for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad which let users search the respective retailers products.

The nearly identical Best Buy Canada and Futureshop apps let iOS users search the respective retailers entire catalogue as well learn more about each product through ratings, reviews and enlarged views.

Telus TV lets you use your XBOX 360 as a digital set top box

Telus this week unveiled a great new feature for its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service which allows Telus TV – recently rebranded as Optik TV – subscribers to use an XBOX 360 as a secondary digital set top box.

The company says it’s the first broadcast distributor in North America to offer customers the ability to use an XBOX 360 in place of a television set top box.

Netflix coming to Canada this fall

California based Netflix said today that it will be expanding its online subscription video-on-demand service to Canadians beginning this fall.

The company says English speaking customers in Canada will be able to watch a broad array of movies and TV episodes on their home computers or on their television via a range of consumer electronics devices capable of streaming from Netflix.

eMachines introduces Mini-e nettop computer

Hoping to cash in on increasing demand for small form nettop computers which can be used primarily in the home theatre, emachines today introduced the Mini-e Home Entertainment Center.

Similar to the popular Acer Revo, the Mini-e is about the size, weight and thickness of a small book. It features a glossy black diamond shaped chassis mounted on a matte silver pedestal while emitting a soft ambient green glow along the lower edge.

DivX Plus V8 available as free download

DivX today announced that version eight of the company’s DivX Plus Software is now available as a free download.

The software package is comprised of four individual products: the Player, Web Player, Codec Pack, and the DivX Plus Converter.

HDMI v1.4a Specification for 3DTV announced

HDMI Licensing, LLC, the group responsible for overseeing the HDMI standard, announced this week the release of specification version HDMI 1.4a featuring key enhancements for 3DTV.
