HDTV Primer: What you need to watch HD Programming

Over the last five years, the most discussed topic in Digital Home’s Digital Forum has been high definition television (HDTV). In reviewing the thousands of questions we have received about HD technology, it’s clear to us that the consumer electronics industry has done a lousy job in educating Canadians about this wonderful technology.

For example, a common misperception among Canadian consumers is that all you need to watch television programming in HD is to buy an HDTV. In this article, Digital Home explains briefly what HDTV is and the three things you’ll need if you really want to watch HD broadcasts on it.

HDMI v1.4a Specification for 3DTV announced

HDMI Licensing, LLC, the group responsible for overseeing the HDMI standard, announced this week the release of specification version HDMI 1.4a featuring key enhancements for 3DTV.

Sales of Internet enabled televisions on the rise

More than one quarter of all televisions purchased by American consumers in January were linked to the internet according to a new survey by iSuppli.

The research firm surveyed 800 consumers and found that 27.5% had connected their new TVs to the Web, either through the internal capabilities of their sets or through an external device, such as a media extender or video game console.

Over 211 million televisions sold in 2009

Global television sales were up 2% in 2009 to 211 million units according to the latest figures from DisplaySearch. Flat panel TV technologies like LCD enjoyed even better growth with sales up 34% from 2008.

1.2 million 3D-Capable TVs to be sold in 2010

Global sales of 3D-capable televisions are expected to reach 1.2 million units up from 200,000 units in 2009. according to a recent report from Displaysearch.

The firm forecasts that the total stereoscopic 3D display market will grow to 64 million units by 2018.

CES: Panasonic shows off 3D home theatre

At CES in Las Vegas, Panasonic showed off their new 3D-capable home theatre which included new 3D capable Plasma HDTVs, 3D capable Blu-ray player and 3D active-shutter glasses.
