Two out of three Americans have access to broadband internet

The adoption of broadband internet access slowed dramatically in the United States over the last year according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.

The researchers found that two-thirds of American adults (66%) now have a broadband internet connection at home, a figure that is little changed from the 63% with a high-speed home connection at a similar point in 2009.

MTS accelerates Fibre to the Home deployment in Manitoba

Winnipeg based MTS has announced plans to spend $125 million over the next five years as part of an accelerated deployment of its fibre to the home (FTTH) network, named FiON, in Manitoba.

By the end of 2015, MTS expects to deploy fibre to about 120,000 homes in close to 20 Manitoba communities such as Steinbach, Thompson, The Pas and in areas of Winnipeg.

Rogers cuts Internet Service without reducing prices

Without any announcement, Rogers Cable this month has cut service on some of its most popular Internet Service plans without any changes in pricing. The changes mean that Rogers customers will have to subscribe to more expensive internet plans in order to receive the same level of service.

Four out of Five Canadians logged on to the net in 2009

In 2009, four out of five (80%) Canadians aged 16 and older or 21.7 million people logged onto the Internet for personal reasons, up from 73% in 2007, according to Industry Canada’s 2009 Canadian Internet Use Survey.

The survey, which was conducted in November of 2009, asked more than 23,000 Canadians aged 16 years and over about their Internet use, including shopping, for the previous 12 months.

Videotron boosts basic internet download speeds

Videotron said today it is increasing download speeds for its Basic Internet service from 1 Mbps to 2.5 Mbps.

Shaw latest to roll out Internet VOD

Following in the footsteps of its cable and satellite competitors, Shaw Cable yesterday rolled out an Internet video on demand service where subscribers can order pay per view movies online and then watch them via cable or the internet.

In order to use the new service, users must be Shaw Digital Cable customers with at least one digital cable box and must subscribe to Shaw Internet.

Bell Aliant to offer FTTH in Sydney this fall

Bell Aliant today announced its plans to bring a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to 30,000 homes and businesses in Sydney Nova Scotia this fall.

FTTH connectivity is notable because it allows telecommunications providers to offer numerous services such as high definition television along with very fast internet speeds.
