YouTube To Launch 3 Original Movies and One Series Starring PewDiePie This Wednesday
This Wednesday, YouTube will launch its own original content available for paid viewing. The Google-owned site will launch three feature-length movies online and one series of episodes starring Swedish comedian PewDiePie. PewDiePie, whose videos feature his own commentary while playing video games, is currently the world’s most popular YouTuber with 42 million subscribers.
How big are these entertainers? YouTube stars can now be found on the cover of magazines like Tiger Beat, forming a new wave of Internet celebrities.
“The diverse, dynamic creators behind these films have already built massive audiences on YouTube, rivaling many cable shows,” says Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content. “We want to help them tell bigger and bolder stories that delight you, their fans.”
In 2015, the general public spent 16.5 billion hours watching YouTube videos according to Internet analytics company comScore Inc.
YouTube’s original content will be available first to subscribers to YouTube Red, which is currently only available in the U.S.
Canadians will eventually be able to purchase the videos through YouTube and Google Play for $14.99 per movie and $2.49 per episode.
