Telus expands 4G wireless services in Manitoba
Telus said today it has improved wireless service in Manitoba by turning on more HSPA+ dual-cell wireless sites in Manitoba.
The new wireless coverage can be found in Selkirk, Victoria Beach, Lockport, Ste. Anne, Steinbach and along Highway 1 to Portage la Prairie. The company also said that full coverage will be available in Portage la Prairie in early 2012, with service to Brandon expected next summer.
The Dual Cell technology uses multiplexing techniques to combine two wireless data carriers, operating at a theoretical of up to 21 Mb/s each, into a single carrier with theoretical downlink speeds up to 42 Mb/s.
While the theoretical download speeds are 42 Mb/s, the actual throughput consumers can expect is probably closer to 8 Mb/s. While considerably less than the theoretical maximum, it would still be roughly double the 4 Mb/s being achieved today by users in these communities today.
Actual download speeds are typically a function of the device being used; how far a user is from a cell tower; and how congested the network is at the time of downloading.
