Zune Music Marketplace coming in October

Microsoft Canada has announced that it will be expanding its Zune Music Marketplace next Monday October 3rd along with the Zune Music Pass.

The company says the Music Marketplace now offers more than 14 million songs from the four major labels – EMI, Warner Music Group, Sony BMG and Universal Music Group – as well as thousands of independent music labels.

Songs may be purchased in MP3 format while Zune Music Pass subscribers will be able to stream them to multiple devices.

The Zune Music Pass will cost $9.99 CDN per month or $99.90 CDN annually and enable to stream music directly to their Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Windows PC, Zune devices. Subscribers will also be able to download songs and synchronize them on up to a total of four devices – 1 PC + any combination of PC, Zune device and Windows Phone.

Zune Pass subscribers will also have access to unlimited streaming music videos on Windows PC via the Zune PC software and later this fall on Xbox 360.

In Canada, the Zune Music Marketplace will competed with numerous online sellers of digital media including industry giant iTunes from Apple. The biggest competitor to Zune Pass in this country is likely Rdio which also offers a premium music service that can be heard on multiple devices for $9.99 a month.

For Canadians, the Zune brand is not well unknown. It first appeared in the United States in November 2006 when Microsoft introduced the Zune media player, their answer to the Apple iPod. Introduced with great fanfare, the device failed to take off with consumers and by early 2009 it had just 2% of the market for portable media players.

The Zune was sold in Canada for a brief period of time. Microsoft began selling the device in this country beginning in June 2008 but by August of 2009, most Canadian stores had stop selling them.

    why do they insist on using the this brand, they should just label it Xbox marketplace and spend the effort marketing that the Xbox services run on all of the devices! Are you listening Microsoft!
