Four out of ten American mobile users now own a smartphone

Four out of ten (40%) U.S. mobile users over the age 18 now have smartphones according to recent report from Nielsen.

The July 2011 survey found Google’s Android operating system to be the most popular smartphone operating system. Forty percent of mobile consumers (16% of all mobile users) reported they had a smartphone with an Android OS.

Next up was Apple’s iOS with 28% and RIM’s Blackberry with 19%.

One out of three adults, who say they are likely to get a new smartphone in the next year, said they wanted their next smartphone to be an iPhone while one third said they wanted an Android device.
