Sales of mobile phones tops 340 million in third quarter

The Global market for mobile phones market grew 14.6% in the third quarter of this year, the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, according to a recent report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

IDC says vendors shipped 340.5 million during the July to September timeframe compared to 297.1 million units in the third quarter of 2009.

Cogeco reports results for fiscal 2010

Cogeco, the nation’s fourth largest cable provider, this week announced its financial results for the fourth quarter and 2010 fiscal year which ended August 31 2010.

Cogeco reported overall revenue for the quarter increased by 5.5% from the same period a year earlier to $331.7 million while operating income fell 3% to $73.9 million. Net income for the quarter dropped $16.2% to 12.3 million.

Videotron announces Wireless service in three more markets

Videotron announced today that it has extended its 3G wireless service in the Mauricie, Sherbrooke and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield areas of Quebec.

“Following up on the resounding success of the initial launch of our advanced mobile service, we are pleased to announce that we are expanding it to new markets,” said Robert Depatie, President & CEO of Videotron. “This move brings Videotron into the Trois-Rivieres market for the first time.”

Goodbye Canwest, Hello Shaw Media

After receiving final approval from the CRTC last Friday, Shaw Communications today will complete the purchase of the bankrupt Canwest Global television properties.

Canwest entered creditor bankruptcy protection in late 2009, leading to the sale of the company’s assets to Shaw in a deal announced this past May.

Newspaper and magazine subscriptions now available for Kobo eReader

Kobo today announced Kobo eReader owners can now subscribe to the digital copy of dozens of U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines.

To stimulate trial, the company, in conjunction with publishers, is offering 14 day free trials to selected newpaper and magazines.

Rogers Cable delivers firmware update for 8300 HD PVR

Without any fanfare, Rogers Cable in Ontario this week began rolling out new firmware for the company’s popular 8300 dual tuner HD PVR.

Firmware SARA began rolling out on Tuesday and should be available to all 8300 HD owners in coming days.

Bell Satellite TV drops HDNet

In the information section of its Electronic Program Guide Bell Satellite TV (BSTV) is telling customers that, effective December 7th, it will no longer offer HDNet.

Bell has not given any reason for dropping the popular high definition channel, however, HDNet representatives tell Digital Home readers the decision came after Bell told the station that it would be moving HDNet to a less desirable theme pack, a move the station did not want

Mobilicity coming soon to Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa

Upstart wireless phone provider Mobilicity has announced that it would soon launch wireless service in Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa.

The privately owned Toronto-based company did not provide an exact date for when it would launch service in the three cities but did say it would happen in November.
