Oprah Winfrey network coming to Canada in 2011

Corus Entertainment and OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network said today that they have reached an agreement that will enable Corus to add OWN to its line-up of Canadian digital television channels.

Hockey Night in Canada coming in 3D for two nights

Panasonic Canada and CBC have announced they will produce two 3DTV broadcasts of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada this coming season.

Games to be produced in stereoscopic vision include Montreal versus Toronto on Saturday, December 11 and the Heritage Classic from McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sunday, February 20, 2011.

ATN to launch second Cricket channel

ATN, a Canadian broadcasting company specializing in Asian television channels for the Canadian market, announced this week it will soon launch a second television channel dedicated to cricket.

‘Cricket Plus’, the broadcasters first channel dedicated to the sport of cricket, launched in Canada in 2007.

Blackberry Playbook announced

As expected, Research in Motion (RIM) announced its first tablet during the keynote address at its DevCon developer conference in San Francisco.

The new device, which is expected to compete with the Apple iPad, will sport a seven inch touchscreen (1,024 x 600 pixels), a 1GHz dual-core processor, a gigabyte of RAM, and will run on the QNX operating system.

Kobo announces Wireless ebook reader

Kobo, which released its first low cost eBook reader in May, today announced an upgraded Kobo Wireless eReader which will sell for the same price beginning in late October.

The company says the new hardware features WiFi connectivity; faster performance; longer battery life; and a sharper eInk screen.

Apple Remote Version 2.0 released

Apple has released an updated version of its Remote application which is optimized for the retina display on the iPhone 4 and new iPod touch and which adds support for the iPad’s larger screen.

Using your home’s WiFi network, the app lets you turn your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad into a remote control for iTunes and Apple TV. Devices must have iOS 3.1.2 or later.

Sonos releases firmware update and iPad app

Sonos, makers of wireless music systems for the home, announced today the release of Sonos System Software 3.3 along with its long overdue Sonos Controller for iPad application.

The new firmware includes support for AAC radio stations and the Spotify streaming music service in Europe. The update is also required for Sirius and Window Media Server users on this side of the Atlantic.

Sony Dash now in Canada

Sony Canada last week announced its Dash “personal internet viewer” is now available in Canada for $230.

Featuring a 7-inch colour touch screen, the Dash is an WiFi enabled internet clock radio which can also run 1,000 free tiny Internet widgets including news, calendars, weather, and sports.
