Amazon’s newest Kindle selling like hotcakes

The latest generation of Amazon Kindle readers are selling faster than at anytime in their history according to a statement put out by the company today.

Amazon says it began shipping the new devices to customers who had pre-ordered today, two days earlier than previously announced.

Amazon says that in the four weeks since the new Kindle and Kindle 3G devices became available for pre-order, customers have ordered more Kindles on and combined than any other product.

Sales have been so strong that the Kindle WiFi and Kindle 3G are currently sold out. Amazon says orders placed today – August 25th – won’t be shipped until around September 17th.

The company refuses to divulge actual sales figures but claims that for the last two years, the Kindle has been the company’s bestselling product.

The third generation Kindle features a 6-inch electronic-ink screen with 50 percent better contrast than previous Kindle readers inside a body that is 21 percent smaller and 15% lighter. A 3G version is also available for $189.

“Kindle is the best-selling product on for two years running and our new generation Kindles are continuing that momentum” said Steven Kessel, a senior vice president at Amazon.
