Al Jazeera English now available on Shaw Cable

Al Jazeera English, a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week English-language international news service, announced today that it now available on Shaw Cable.

The service first began broadcasting in Canada on Bell TV, Rogers and Vidéotron on May 4th of this year.

Al Jazeera, which usually means “The Island” in Arabic but more commonly known in Gulf Arabic as “The Peninsula” – referring to the Qatar Peninsula in the Gulf region – is a television network headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Initially launched as Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel with the same name, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages, and in several regions of the world.

Al Jazeera English launched in November 2006, has more than 1,200 employees and now airs in more than 100 countries and is available in more than 200 million households worldwide.

AJE also announced today the opening of its Canadian bureau in Toronto making the only international news channel with a bureau in Canada.

Combined with the Al Jazeera Arabic service, it now has over 60 international news bureaus around the world.

AJE will be available to Shaw Digital Cable subscribers on channel 175 and will be free of charge for a promotional trial-period that will last until August 31.
