Skype for iPhone now supports 3G Calling

The Skype 2.0 iPhone app was released today which gives users the ability to make Skype calls over your 3G connection.

In the past, Skype users were only able to use the app to make Skype calls over Wifi.

Additional new features and enhancements in version 2, according to its developers, include:

  • Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio on iPhone 3GS or 2nd generation iPod touch and onwards.
  • Enhanced call quality indicator, which will help customers choose the best moment to call.
  • Improved start-up time
  • Rapid access to the dial pad from the home screen

While enabling 3G calling satisfies the number one request among iPhone Skype users, not all the release news was good news however. The company says that while Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi will remain free, Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G will only be free until the end of the year.

Details of pricing for next year was not announced, however, speculation is that Skypes prices will still make it a cheaper alternative to wirless carrier rates for long distance calls.
