Opera Mini Browser now available for the iPhone

After weeks of speculation among iPhone users debating whether the application would be approved by Apple, the Opera Mini web browser for iPhone is now available from the iTunes App store.

First shown at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in February, the browser is known for its speed which the company says is up to six times faster than the iPhone’s native Safari browser.

The speed comes thanks to something called server side rendering. Simply speaking the way it works is when you request a web page in the Opera Mini application, the page is actually sent first to Opera servers where it is compressed and then sent on to your iPhone.

By compressing the web page up to 90% before sending it to the iPhone, pages load faster and less data needs to be sent resulting in less data usage on your wireless data plan.

Other notable features of the new browser include page caching and tab browsing.

Feedback on the application from customers at the app store is overwhelmingly positive. When this article was wrtten, the current version had been rated 356 times with 197 users giving it a 5 star rating.

The Opera Mini browser is a free 1MB download from the iTunes Canada store. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later.

It seems a little slow for scrolling. But renders pages much better than Safari!
