Canadians itching to buy new mobile phones
The market for new mobile phones will boom in 2010 if we are to believe a recent report from market research firm TNS.
The firm says that a whopping 55% of on-line Canadians between aged 16 and 60 are planning to buy a mobile phone in the next six months, up from just 19% at the same time last year.
Among Canadians who said they were interested in buying a new phone in the first half 2010, 28% said they were planning to buy one with a touchscreen, while 19% said they would buy one with a full QWERTY keyboard.
TNS’s Rajaie Matuk, who directed the Canadian portion of the study, cautioned Digital Home, saying the 55% figure will not necessarily translate into actual sales, however, the big increase from 19% a year earlier shows that consumer confidence among Canadian’s is improving significantly.
The optimistic buying mood will be good news to the big three wireless phone providers – Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility and Bell Mobility – who will be facing new competition in 2010 from Wind Mobile, Videotron and Public Mobile.
The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) estimates that at the end of June 2009, there were 22.5 million wireless phone subscribers in Canada.
To arrive at its conclusions, TNS conducted online interviews with 985 Canadians between the ages of 16 and 60 in early November.
