This Week on Blu-ray

night_at_the_museum_2Another disappointing week for Blu-ray releases with little for us to recommend for most readers.

Film buffs who appreciate foreign cinema should appreciate “A Christmas Tale”, a French black comedy starring Catherine Deneuve as the matriarch of a dysfunctional family who come together near Christmas.

Released in 2008, the film is not a feel good Christmas film that appeals to a mass audience, however, it but did receive very positive reviews from critics including being nominated as the Best Foreign Language Film by the Broadcast Film Critics in the U.S.A.

Other releases worth mentioning this week include: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”, from 20th Centry Fox, the sequel to the 2006 comedy film “night at the Museum”; and “Gremlins”, the 1984 comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante and produced by Stephen Spielberg.

The following is a list of Blu-ray titles set for release this week. (Canadian readers should note that not all titles may be available in this country)

  • Ben 10: Alien Swarm
  • A Christmas Tale
  • Death Warrior
  • Gimme Shelter
  • The Green Mile

  • Gunslinger Girl: Season 1

Well.. who cares. I’m never gonna pay the extortionate prices for Crap-ray discs. My DVD’s look just as good on my plasma.

I don’t buy movies or music as a protest against the media giants and their pushing corporate agendas onto the world’s governments via treaties and legislation such as ACTA. They would be happiest if we paid every time we watched a movie or listened to a song. Instead I watch movies and listen to music borrowed fromthe public library. And of course there is internet radio, another great listening experience just as radio was in the past.
So Blu-ray and whatever they come up with next doesn’t matter to me at all. CD’s and DVD’s are fine and will be for some time to come.

Although there aren’t very many GREAT movies released this week, there still are a few good ones to purchase or rent. It all depends on what you like. If you look around you can find previously viewed blue ray at a great price. I have purchased them quite often and have never had a problem with one and I pay a fraction of the original price. And I think that there is a significant difference between regular DVD and Blue Ray but you have to have the proper set up with the proper equiupment. You can’t expect to get great results with a Blue ray player and substandard hook ups. Older dvd’s do look a lot better on a Blue Ray player but Blue Ray disc’s are even better. (IMO) And as for the Government wanting to pay everytime we watch a movie, well guess what we all do anyway. On every rental, purchase or just watching regular tv, you have to pay rental fees, library card subscription (if there is one, I really don’t know) or cable bill. The Govenment get their share one way or another. This of course is one persons opinion.
