Sony Canada chops price of eBook readers

sony_ebook_readersSony Canada said today it will reduce the price of two models of eBook readers just two weeks after Amazon began selling its very popular Kindle ebook reader in Canada.

The price of the Sony Pocket Edition (PRS-300) falls $20 to $240 while the price of the Sony Touch Edition (PRS-600) falls $50 to sell for $350.

Despite the reduction in price, Canadians still must pay a significant premium – almost 20% – for Sony ebook readers. In the U.S., the Pocket and Touch Editions sell for $200 and $300 respectively.

The Reader Pocket and Touch Editions both feature Sony’s electronic paper display that mimics the look of ink on paper, protective sleeve and eBook Library software for transferring files between your computer and the reader.

The Reader Pocket Edition features a five-inch electronic paper display while the Touch Edition features a menu-driven six-inch touch screen panel which enables navigation, page turning, highlighting and note taking with the swipe of a finger or by using the included stylus pen.

The Amazon Kindle sells for $250 U.S. in both Canada and the U.S., sports a 6 inch screen and offers wireless connectivity. In the U.S., Sony also offers a wireless ebook reader, called the Daily Edition, for $400 U.S. The Daily edition is not available in Canada.
