Time spent watching TV continues to climb in U.S.

tvDespite competition for eyeballs from the internet, the amount of television watched by Americans has reached an all-time high in the 2008-2009 TV season.

Ratings giant, Nielsen reports that the average American now spends and average of four hours and 49 minutes a day in front of the TV.

That amount is up four minutes from last season and up 20% from 10 years ago. The average household now watches eight hours and 21 minutes a day on average, also at an all-time high.

Researchers say the continued increase in television consumption can be attributed to several factors including: more television sets in the home; more channels and content to choose from; and greater use of personal video recorders.
