Rogers eliminates 900 employees

rogersDespite profits of over $3.3 billion in the first nine months of 2009, Rogers Communications yesterday fired nine hundred of employees across Canada, mostly in executive and management positions.

The company says the firings were an effort to streamline operations to contend stay competitive with rivals.

Terrie Tweddle, a spokesperson for Rogers said that staff was cut in marketing and communications, human resources, and technology support operations. Tweedle went on to say that cuts in front-line operations, such as call centres and customer services, were minimal.

The job cuts are in addition to an outsourcing plan announced in April that is expected to eliminate some 550 jobs.

Rogers recently reported that its overall operating revenues and profits rose 3% from the first nine months of 2009 to $8.67 billion and $3.27 billion respectively.

The company has approximately 30,000 employees across Canada.

    “The company says the firings were an effort to streamline operations to contend stay competitive with rivals.” –> this is a joke there is no competition

    Rogers wants foreign competition blocked from Canada then fires Canadians to I’m sure move jobs overseas. You can’t have it both ways Rogers…either telecommunications in Canada should be isolated from foreign competition and all jobs stay in Canada or we open up to competition and spread the jobs around and lower prices.

    I am one of the 900 that was fired! Rogers lied about the intent of the restructure and the amount of cuts to all employees, even the directors and managers were deceitful and dishonest right down to minutes before the dismissal packages were handed out, then it was lambs to the slaughter, and miraculously their names were on the dismissal letters! Rogers really doesn’t care much about anybody’s well being, least of all the customers’! It really is all about profits for Rogers!

    @Dave

    Come on man! You expect us to believe that Rogers would lie to us ! I’m sure they care about their employees as much as they care for their customers.

    /sarcasm

    When will these companies learn that the best way to be successful is to sell a good product at a good price and not treat their customers like sheep to be shorn. Lord knows that the second there is an alternative to Rogers they will lose my business.
