Firefox still gaining after five years
Firefox, the free and open source web browser from the Mozilla Corporation, turned five years old this week.
The browser, which is now available for download in more than seventy languages, is now the world’s second most popular browser in the world after Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
According to Net Applications, for the past week, Firefox reached a 25% usage share for the first time ever, up from under 20% a year ago. Internet Explorer led all browsers with a 63.3% share, down from 73.6% a year earlier.
Firefox was first released on November 9, 2004. Major release updates included Firefox 1.5 on November 29, 2005, version 2.0 on October 24, 2006, version 3.0 on June 17, 2008 and most recently version 3.5 was on June 30, 2009.
