Bell launches Mobile MiFi Hotspot

Bell Mobility today launched the Novatel MiFi 2372 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot which offers simultaneous Wi-Fi connectivity for up to five devices including computers, portable gaming devices and media players.

The device, which weighs about three ounces, is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems and can operate for up to four hours on a single charge.

Millions of Canadians will be unable to watch the Grey Cup

In recent months, conventional broadcasters such as CTVglobemedia and CanWest Global, have urged the federal government to slap a $350 million a year TV tax on Canadian consumers in order to support local television stations.

The private broadcasters claim that viewership on local over-the-air television stations is in decline and that a tax is required to keep the stations from being having to shutdown.

Global PC sales expected to reach 299 million units in 2009

Gartner is predicting the number of personal computers sold throughout the world will reach 298.9 million units in 2009, up 2.8% from 2008.

This forecast is more optimistic than the research firm’s final September forecast, which anticipated a 2 percent decline in shipments for 2009.

Al Jazeera English gets CRTC approval

In a broadcasting decision handed down yesterday, the CRTC has approved a request to add Al Jazeera English (AJE) to the lists of stations which may be distributed in Canada.

AJE is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week English-language international news service currently available in more than 130 million households worldwide.

Rogers buying millions of shares in Cogeco

Rogers Communications Inc. announced today that it has entered into agreements to purchase 3,200,000 subordinate voting shares of Cogeco Cable Inc. and 1,623,500 subordinate voting shares of Cogeco Inc.

Rogers is Canada’s largest cable provider in Canada with just under 2.3 million basic cable customers while Cogeco is the country’s fourth largest cable provider with 865,000 basic cable cusomers.
